Victor Osimhen transfer blow: Why Galatasaray decision is bad news for Napoli

Reigning Super Lig champions Galatasaray have made their transfer position on Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen clear, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Turkish giants have decided against selling the Nigeria international this summer, despite strong interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The decision could have serious consequences for Napoli, according to IlNapolista. This is because the former Italian champions are waiting for a percentage of any future permanent transfer involving their former forward.

Galatasaray shut the door on Osimhen sale

Galatasaray have rejected several major approaches for Osimhen and now plan to keep the 27-year-old forward for their domestic and European campaigns.

Atlético Madrid reportedly pushed forward with a package worth up to €125 million, but Galatasaray turned it down. Arsenal also tried a player-plus-cash deal involving Viktor Gyökeres and €30 million, while Tottenham Hotspur made a proposal worth around €60 million.

Galatasaray have little reason to accept any of those offers. Osimhen signed a permanent deal that ties him to the Istanbul club until June 2029, and his contract does not contain a release clause. That gives Galatasaray full control over whether he leaves and at what price.

The former Lille striker is also central to their plans for the new season. After helping Galatasaray win the Süper Lig title, Osimhen is expected to lead their attack again as they prepare for another UEFA Champions League campaign.

There is also a major financial barrier to any return to Italy. Galatasaray could face a €70 million penalty if they sell Osimhen to another Serie A club before September 2027 because of terms linked to his departure from Napoli.

Why Galatasaray’s decision hurts Napoli

Napoli had built a valuable financial safety net into the agreement that took Osimhen permanently to Galatasaray. The Italian club secured a 10% sell-on clause, meaning it will receive 10% of a future transfer fee.

That clause could have delivered a huge payment if Galatasaray accepted Atlético Madrid’s reported €125 million offer. Napoli would have received €12.5 million without having to sell a player themselves. Tottenham’s reported €60 million proposal would have produced another €6 million for Napoli if accepted.

Galatasaray’s decision has now blocked those immediate payments. That matters because Napoli have used player sales as an important part of their transfer strategy and squad rebuilding.

There is also a longer-term risk. Osimhen is under contract until 2029, and keeping him through his peak years could reduce Napoli’s eventual return if his form drops, injuries affect him or his market value falls before Galatasaray eventually decide to sell.

Napoli therefore face a difficult situation. They could benefit from a much larger fee if Osimhen continues to perform at the highest level, but every season without a sale also gives the striker less time to produce a record transfer that would produce the maximum yield on their 10% clause.
