Victor Osimhen transfer: Chelsea mistake exposed after Hull City draw

Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with newly promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge has raised fresh questions about the club’s decision not to sign Victor Osimhen in the summer, Afrik-Foot reports.

Morgan Rogers and João Pedro got on the scoresheet for Xabi Alonso’s side, but Chelsea struggled to turn their spells of pressure into a convincing win. The Blues had enough attacking talent to create danger, yet they lacked the ruthless striker who could have changed the game when Hull refused to fold.

That is where Osimhen’s name comes into the conversation. Chelsea had an opportunity to sign the Super Eagles striker after allowing Nicolas Jackson to leave during the summer. Instead, the club chose to trust Rogers, Pedro and veteran Danny Welbeck to lead the attack.

The Hull game offered an early warning of what that decision could mean. Chelsea can still produce exciting attacking spells, but when a match becomes difficult, they may need a forward who can turn half-chances into goals.

Osimhen could have solved Chelsea’s attacking problem

Alonso eventually turned to Welbeck in the second half as Chelsea searched for the winning goal. The former England international has vast Premier League experience, but at this stage of his career he is not the kind of striker who can be expected to carry a title challenge on his shoulders.

Rogers and Pedro have the quality to hurt Premier League defences, while Welbeck can still make an impact. But Chelsea’s problem against Hull was not a lack of attacking names. It was the absence of that extra level of quality in the penalty area.

Osimhen would have offered exactly that. The Nigeria international has built his reputation on his movement, strength, speed and finishing. He is the type of striker who can attack crosses, run behind defenders and punish a defence with very little space. Those qualities could have given Chelsea another solution when their normal attacking play stopped working.

One draw in September does not prove Chelsea made the wrong transfer decision. But the Hull result provides an early reminder of the risk they took.

Chelsea may be dangerous in patches under Alonso, but if they want to challenge for the Premier League title, they could eventually regret not adding a proven world-class goalscorer such as Osimhen.
