Victor Osimhen transfer: Key reason Galatasaray turned down Al-Hilal’s ₦204.3bn offer

Galatasaray have rejected a verbal €130 million (₦204.3bn) offer from Al-Hilal for Victor Osimhen, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Saudi Pro League giants approached the Turkish champions through an intermediary on Wednesday as they renewed their efforts to take the Nigeria international away from Istanbul.

According to transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, Galatasaray were not willing to negotiate and had no intention of entering talks over the proposal.

That stance is significant because the offer would have been one of the biggest transfer fees ever paid for an African player, almost eclipsing the amount Real Madrid aspent on Yan Diomande.

Yet, Galatasaray’s decision was not primarily about the money. The Turkish champions have made their position clear through their actions in recent months.

Galatasaray see Osimhen as the face of their project

The biggest reason behind Galatasaray’s refusal to engage with Al-Hilal is their belief that Osimhen is too important to the next stage of the club’s ambitions.

Galatasaray invested heavily to sign the striker permanently from Napoli after his successful loan spell in Istanbul.

The Nigeria international repaid that faith by scoring 22 goals and providing six assists in 33 games across all competitions last season.

His influence now goes beyond his numbers. Galatasaray are preparing for another season in which domestic success remains the minimum expectation, while the club also wants to reach the latter parts of the UEFA Champions League.

Osimhen is central to those ambitions. The striker gives Okan Buruk a proven goalscorer capable of leading the line, which is very important considering Mauro Icardi’s departure.

Replacing Osimhen would not mean losing another forward. It would force Galatasaray to rethink an attacking structure that has been built around the former LOSC Lille striker.

Why €130m is not enough

The scale of Al-Hilal’s proposal makes Galatasaray’s plans very clear. A €130m offer is the kind of figure that would normally force a club to consider the possibility of selling, particularly when the player could potentially generate a huge profit.

Galatasaray, however, are not approaching the Osimhen situation as a business opportunity.

The club’s previous stance had been that a sufficiently large offer could potentially lead to negotiations. Reports had placed their valuation of the striker in the €130m-€150m range.

Selling him would provide enormous financial resources, but it would also create an immediate problem, particularly with domestic rivals strengthening.

Fenerbahçe have added major attacking talent, while Trabzonspor have raised expectations with the arrival of Mohamed Salah.

Galatasaray therefore have little incentive to weaken their own squad at a time when their biggest challengers are attempting to close the gap.

Al-Hilal’s money meets Galatasaray’s ambition

Al-Hilal have the financial strength to make Osimhen an extraordinary offer.

The Saudi club have previously demonstrated their willingness to spend heavily on elite players and could potentially offer the Nigerian a salary that would be extremely difficult for a European or Turkish club to match.

That explains why the transfer remains an attractive possibility from the Saudi side, but money can only solve one part of the problem.

Osimhen’s preference would also become crucial if the situation develops further. Previous Saudi approaches did not result in a transfer because the striker wanted to remain in Europe.

For now, however, Al-Hilal have not even reached the stage where Osimhen’s decision becomes the decisive factor. Galatasaray have effectively closed the door before negotiations could begin.

The €130m proposal is a reminder of Osimhen’s enormous value in the transfer market, but Galatasaray’s response reveals how much the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner is valued in Istanbul.

They are not simply protecting an expensive investment. They are protecting the centrepiece of a sporting project.

The Turkish champions spent €75m to bring Osimhen permanently from Napoli, but their decision to reject Al-Hilal suggests they are not measuring his value through a potential resale fee.

They are measuring it through goals, trophies, Champions League ambitions, supporter expectations and the difficulty of finding another striker capable of replacing his influence.
