Osimhen’s Champions League draw: 3 giants Galatasaray star must tame

Victor Osimhen will face some familiar names and some of Europe’s strongest clubs after Galatasaray were handed a demanding set of opponents in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Turkish champions will play Barcelona, Aston Villa, Feyenoord and Stuttgart at home, with Paris Saint-Germain, Sporting CP, Lille and AEK Athens waiting away. The draw was held in Monaco on Thursday.

The eight matches will give Osimhen several different tests. There is a reunion with Lille, the French club where he became a major European striker. There is also a meeting with PSG, the reigning European champions, and Barcelona, one of the most famous clubs in the competition.

Galatasaray qualified for the league phase as Turkish champions after winning their fourth straight domestic title under Okan Buruk. They reached the Champions League round of 16 last season before Liverpool ended their run. Osimhen is Galatasaray’s key player after he scored 59 goals in 74 matches across his first two seasons in Turkey.

Osimhen set for Lille reunion

The Lille match has the clearest personal story for Osimhen. The Super Eagles striker joined Lille in 2019 after his season at Belgian club Charleroi. He quickly became one of the most exciting young forwards in France. His 2019/20 campaign brought 18 goals and five assists in 38 matches in all competitions, winning the Marc-Vivien Foe award.

Lille also gave Osimhen his first Champions League experience, registerinh five appearances in the competition during that season.

His form in France helped create his next major move. Napoli signed him in 2020, and he later became a key figure in the Italian club’s Serie A title-winning campaign in 2022/23. He was the league’s top scorer when Napoli won their first Italian title in 33 years.

Now, several years after leaving France, Osimhen will return to Lille as an opponent.

There is another link with the German game. Stuttgart will travel to Istanbul, giving Osimhen a meeting with a club from the country where his European career started. He joined VfL Wolfsburg as an 18-year-old in January 2017 and made 16 appearances for the club.

His first Bundesliga appearance came against Borussia Mönchengladbach in May 2017. Wolfsburg had signed him from Nigeria after he scored 10 goals at the 2015 Under-17 World Cup.

Barcelona and PSG provide major tests

Barcelona and PSG will bring a different level of European experience to Galatasaray’s campaign.

Barcelona are one of nine teams in Pot 1 and have won the European Cup and Champions League five times. The Spanish champions have finished top of their Champions League group or league phase more often than any other club, with 19 first-place finishes. Their current side also includes Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player to reach 30 Champions League appearances last season at 18 years and 240 days.

The match will put Osimhen against a Barcelona defence that will have to deal with his speed, strength and movement in the penalty area. Interestingly, Osimhen could be playing for Barcelona by the time this game kicks off as the Spanish giants are still one of the clubs looking to sign the Nigerian this summer.

PSG are an even more difficult assignment on paper. The French club are the defending Champions League winners after beating Arsenal on penalties in the 2025/26 final in Budapest.

Galatasaray will travel to Paris, adding another major European away test to their schedule.

Aston Villa will provide another high-level match at RAMS Park. Villa won the 2025/26 Europa League under Unai Emery and previously reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2024/25. Feyenoord, meanwhile, return to the competition after finishing second in the Netherlands. Their European history includes winning the European Cup in 1970.

Sporting CP, Lille and AEK Athens will all be away fixtures. AEK return to the league phase after winning the Greek title and reaching the Conference League quarter-finals last season.

Eight matches, one table and a race for the knockouts

Galatasaray will play four matches at RAMS Park and four away. The club’s home opponents are Barcelona, Aston Villa, Feyenoord and Stuttgart. Their away opponents are PSG, Sporting CP, Lille and AEK Athens.

The league phase starts between 8 and 10 September. The other matchdays are scheduled for 13/14 October, 20/21 October, 3/4 November, 24/25 November, 8/9 December, 19/20 January and 27 January. The final match dates and kick-off times will be announced by Saturday, 29 August.

The new format has 36 clubs in one table. Each team plays eight different opponents, with four home matches and four away matches. The top eight teams go straight to the round of 16. Teams finishing ninth to 24th enter two-legged knockout play-offs, while those placed 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition.

That makes every point important for Galatasaray. Osimhen enters the campaign as the club’s main attacking threat after scoring seven goals in ten appearances last term. His Champions League schedule now includes a return to Lille, a trip to the reigning European champions in Paris and a home game against Barcelona.

The first match arrives in September. By the end of January, Osimhen and Galatasaray will know whether those eight games have taken them directly into the last 16, into the play-offs or out of Europe.
