Former Premier League champions eye Arthur Okonkwo after Wrexham deadlock

Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is expected to depart Wrexham this summer after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper, who left Arsenal as a free agent three years ago, was instrumental in helping Wrexham secure promotion to the Championship two seasons ago.

Last season, he remained a regular starter until the final stages of the campaign, when manager Phil Parkinson opted to rotate in Danny Ward.

That decision has left the Nigerian goalkeeper’s future uncertain, particularly with only one year remaining on his current deal.

Recent reports indicate that negotiations between Okonkwo’s representatives and Wrexham have stalled, putting several English Football League clubs on high alert.

Given his Championship experience and proven track record in securing promotion, Okonkwo has become an attractive prospect. His recent international debut for the Super Eagles has further elevated his stock.

Leicester City: Fomer Premier League champions Target Arthur Okonkwo

According to AllAboutLeagueOne, Okonkwo has emerged as a transfer target for Leicester City. While the club famously won the Premier League in 2016, they have suffered a significant decline in recent years.

Following an unexpected relegation from the Championship last season, the Foxes will compete in League One for the upcoming campaign. This is a major regression for a club that won the Premier League ten years ago.

However, it remains unclear if Leicester can afford the goalkeeper; with a market value of €5 million, his acquisition may prove difficult for the club given their currently constrained budget.

Acquiring a star of Okonkwo’s caliber would be a major statement for any team in the division, given his proven quality and his historical contributions to Wrexham’s recent rise.
