Rangers Int’l, and two other teams likely to clinch 2026/2027 NPFL title

The 2026/2027 NPFL season promises another fiercely contested title race, but a handful of clubs already appear better equipped than the rest to challenge for the title, Afrik-Foot reports.

Following the release of the opening fixtures, defending champions Rangers International, former champions Enyimba and perennial contenders Rivers United stand out as the strongest candidates to lift the trophy at the end of the campaign.

While clubs such as Kano Pillars, Kwara United, Shooting Stars and Bendel Insurance have the quality to spring surprises, the combination of squad depth, stability and consistency places these three teams a step ahead before the first ball is kicked.

Rangers International remain the team to beat

Champions always begin the new season with a target on their backs, and Rangers International will be no exception.

The Flying Antelopes ended last season as Nigeria’s best side and will open their title defence at home against Katsina United, a fixture that offers the perfect opportunity to lay down an early marker.

Beyond their championship, Rangers have retained the winning mentality that carried them to the crown. The Enugu-based club have built a culture of consistency in navigating a gruelling NPFL campaign.

Their ability to grind out results both home and away was one of the defining features of last season’s triumph. If they maintain that resilience while avoiding injuries to key players, Rangers will once again be the team every rival has to chase.

The biggest challenge, however, will be handling the pressure of defending the title, something that has troubled several recent champions in the NPFL, like Remo Stars, who went from being Champions to relegation.

Rivers United have unfinished NPFL business

If any club looks capable of dethroning Rangers, Rivers United may well be the strongest candidate.

The Port Harcourt side have stood tall over the last few seasons, boasting one of the league’s deepest squads and an experienced technical crew.

Their opening fixture against Plateau United is a solid opportunity to begin strongly before the season gathers momentum.

Unlike many clubs that rely heavily on home form, Rivers United have shown they can collect valuable points on the road, a quality that is very rare in the NPFL.

Should they improve their consistency against lower-ranked opposition, Rivers United could finally convert their quality into another league title.

Enyimba can never be ruled out

Writing off Enyimba before an NPFL season has rarely proven to be a wise decision. Nigeria’s most successful club enter another campaign carrying the weight of expectation, but also the experience required to navigate a long title race.

Their opening away fixture against Niger Tornadoes will immediately test their credentials, while a Matchday Two clash against Shooting Stars could provide an early indication of whether the People’s Elephant are genuine contenders.

Enyimba’s history of winning trophies gives them a psychological advantage over many rivals.

Dark horses waiting to strike

Although Rangers International, Rivers United and Enyimba appear the strongest on paper, several clubs could upset the established order.

Kwara United begin with a blockbuster clash against Kano Pillars and have steadily grown into one of the league’s most competitive sides.

Shooting Stars possess enough quality to challenge if they can show the consistency on the pitch to match their ambitions, while Kano Pillars remain one of Nigeria’s biggest football institutions despite recent struggles.

Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City also add fresh intrigue to the campaign, with their historic first-ever top-flight Lagos derby scheduled for Matchday Two expected to become one of the stories of the season.
