Ryan Alebiosu: How knee injury could affect defender’s push for Nigeria breakthrough

Published on by

Super Eagles defender Ryan Alebiosu faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury at Blackburn Rovers, potentially disrupting his efforts to become a regular presence in Eric Chelle’s squad.

The 24-year-old was forced off in the 41st minute of Blackburn’s Championship meeting with Stoke City on Tuesday, November 3, after sustaining the injury.

Subsequent scans confirmed the pacy wing-back will need surgery, with manager Tony Mowbray estimating a three-to four-month recovery, possibly longer.

Speaking after Blackburn’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United on Saturday, Mowbray confirmed the severity of the setback.

“He had a scan on Wednesday. It’s not good news for him obviously. He looks like he’s going to have an operation, which is three or four months, maybe a touch longer. We’re all disappointed,” the Blackburn manager said in quotes revealed by the Lancashire Telegraph.

The 62-year-old also highlighted what his team would miss during the defender’s absence, particularly his attacking contribution from right-back.

“Ryan’s a real positive for the team. The attacking threat from right back with the legs and the athleticism he brings,” he added.

Ryan Alebiosu’s Super Eagles progress faces interruption

The timing is frustrating for Alebiosu, who has been nothing short of superb at club level. He started all 12 of Blackburn’s Championship matches in the 2026/27 season before the injury, accumulating more than 1,000 minutes.

His consistent involvement has helped him maintain the momentum needed to compete for a place in Nigeria’s national team.

Alebiosu made his Super Eagles debut in Nigeria’s 3-1 victory over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, a separate injury during that tournament restricted his involvement, leaving him eager to make a bigger contribution when another opportunity arrived.

After an AFCON bronze medal in January, he admitted that missing matches at the tournament had been frustrating.

“Hopefully, the next chance I get, I will get more of a chance in the squad,” he said.

Since that tournament, the Blackburn winger has not gotten a call-up to the Super Eagles, and that opportunity may now take longer to arrive. With an estimated three-to-four-month recovery period, Alebiosu could miss the March international break while he works his way back to fitness, and if he doesn’t play any of the qualifiers, his chances of getting called up for the AFCON 2027 tournament next summer will be very low.

Competition for places will not wait

The injury also complicates his attempt to establish himself for Nigeria. Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel remain options at right-back, while Abdullahi Bewene is another defender in Eric Chelle’s plans.

Alebiosu’s attacking instincts and athleticism offer a different outlet, but he will need to regain his fitness and return to the level that made him a regular starter at Blackburn.

There is also a personal challenge to overcome. The defender previously revealed that he spent about two years struggling with knee problems as a teenager, termed that time as ‘depressing’, a period that prevented him from playing football consistently.

That history makes his latest setback like a Deja vu moment, very disappointing, although it does not necessarily mean he faces another prolonged absence.

For now, the priority is a successful operation and rehabilitation. Alebiosu has already shown he can contribute to the Super Eagles; the challenge will be to return to action for Blackburn, boost their chances of a promotion campaign to the Premier League, and then focus on a call-up to the Nigerian National team.
