Sadiq’s Real Sociedad curse strikes again

Super Eagles forward Umar Sadiq faces another setback in his quest to reignite his career at Real Sociedad, with the striker sidelined for about a month due to a hamstring injury.

Sadiq picked up the knock during a training session ahead of Sociedad's La Liga clash with Athletic Club, reportedly clutching his hamstring in pain and exiting the session early.

The striker had only just returned from international duty with Nigeria.

Umar Sadiq's endless injury woes

Injuries have plagued Sadiq since his high-profile transfer from Almería to Sociedad in the 2022/23 season.

His debut campaign ended prematurely after just three games when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. While he made his return last season, Sadiq struggled to regain his sharpness, and his minutes dwindled as he often came off the bench.

Hopes of a transfer during the last window fizzled out, leaving him to battle for form and opportunities at Sociedad.

This season has not offered much relief either, with the 27-year-old managing only one assist in eight appearances.

Back in training after the international break, he was preparing for Sociedad’s Copa del Rey match against lower-division side Jove Español when injury struck again.

Fans and coaches alike had hoped this season would mark a turnaround for the former Roma forward, but this latest setback adds to his frustrations.

Sadiq, who won bronze with Nigeria at the 2014 Rio Olympics, will have to now work his way back to this latest setback and regain the form that saw him shine at Almería.
