Sergio Ramos buys Sevilla: What new ownership means for Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke

Published on by

Nigerian stars Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke are set to begin a new chapter at Sevilla after former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos agreed a deal to become the new owner of the La Liga side Afrik-Foot reports.

Ramos, who started his professional career at Sevilla before becoming one of Real Madrid’s greatest-ever defenders, has reportedly completed a takeover worth around €450 million through his investment company, Five Eleven Capital, alongside a group of international investors. The agreement was finalised on Tuesday, May 12, after lengthy talks with the club’s current majority shareholders.

The move represents a dramatic return to the club where Ramos first made his name as a teenager before leaving for Madrid in 2005. More than two decades later, he is now returning not as a player, but as the public face of a project designed to rescue Sevilla from years of financial instability and sporting decline.

Sevilla have spent much of the 2025-26 campaign battling near the relegation zone rather than competing for European places, a huge fall for a club that dominated the UEFA Europa League during the last decade. Reports in Spain suggest the club’s debt currently stands close to €180 million, one of the major reasons behind the ownership change.

The new investors believe Ramos’ profile can help rebuild Sevilla’s global image, attract new sponsors and restore confidence inside the club after years of internal disagreements between shareholder groups. The takeover is also expected to bring major structural changes behind the scenes, with several long-serving figures likely to leave as Ramos begins a fresh era at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium.

Sevilla: Adams and Ejuke futures under spotlight

The arrival of Ramos could completely reshape the futures of Super Eagles forwards Adams and Ejuke at Sevilla.

Adams joined Sevilla from Montpellier HSC in January 2025 and has become one of the key figures in the club’s survival battle. The Nigerian striker at the weekend scored an important goal in Sevilla’s win over RCD Espanyol on May 9, a result that helped ease fears of relegation.

Despite those contributions, Sevilla may still consider selling the former Lillestrom forward this summer as part of a wider squad rebuild. His value has reportedly risen to around €30 million, and Premier League clubs are believed to be monitoring his situation closely.

Sevilla’s financial problems mean profitable sales could become necessary, even for players who performed well during the season.

Ejuke’s situation appears even more uncertain. The winger arrived as a free agent in June 2024 and showed flashes of quality with his dribbling, pace and creativity, but inconsistency and injuries affected parts of his campaign. Sevilla are likely open to offers as the new ownership group prepares for what many Spanish outlets have described as a ‘seismic’ sporting reset.

Clubs in England, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the Netherlands have all been linked with the Nigerian winger. Teams in the Premier League reportedly believe Ejuke’s direct style and ability in one-against-one situations could suit English football.

Ramos’ arrival could also trigger major sporting decisions beyond the playing squad. There are already suggestions that Sevilla want a completely new football structure, with fresh recruitment ideas and a younger, more aggressive transfer strategy aimed at pushing the club back toward European competition.

The takeover may also officially close the final chapter of Ramos’ playing career. Spanish football regulations prevent active players from owning clubs in the same competition, meaning the former Spain captain is expected to fully step away from professional football after his recent spell with CF Monterrey in Mexico.

The hope for Sevilla supporters is that one of the club’s greatest academy graduates can now rebuild the institution from the boardroom. However, the start of the Ramos era could also mean difficult decisions about whether the futures of Adams and Ejuke still belong in Seville.
