South Africa vs Nigeria: Super Eagles floored by Ekong error, advantage Bafana for 2026 World Cup

The Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup hopes hit another stumbling block as the South Africa vs Nigeria fixture on Tuesday ended in a 1-1 draw in Bloemfontein.

The result leaves their qualification hopes hanging in the balance, with just two rounds of fixtures left to play in Group C.

The game started on a nervy note for the visitors. In the 25th minute, captain William Troost-Ekong inadvertently put the ball past Stanley Nwabali for an own goal, handing Bafana Bafana the lead. South Africa continued to push forward, but Nigeria gradually settled into the encounter and found a way back.

Just before the break, Calvin Bassey rose highest to meet Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s delivery, powering home a header to bring the Super Eagles level.

The equalizer gave the Super Eagles renewed energy, and the second half became a battle of resilience and missed opportunities for both sides.

What next for Super Eagles after South Africa vs Nigeria disappointment?

The table is no kinder than the pitch. Nigeria sit on 11 points, third in Group C, chasing shadows of qualification.

South Africa remain top with 17, though their fate could yet hinge on FIFA’s verdict over an ineligible player. For the Super Eagles, that is scant comfort.

October brings the final two rounds: Benin away, Lesotho at home. Those matches may be crucial though, not just for their qualification hopes, but also as preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Back-to-back World Cup absences is a nightmare the nation dares not whisper, but it is gradually becoming a reality.
