Nwabali injury: Super Eagles goalkeeper reportedly cleared to face Ghana, Mali

Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is reportedly expected to recover in time for the Super Eagles’ upcoming international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

The 27-year-old has become the country’s undisputed number 1 following his outstanding displays at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024).

Nwabali kept four clean sheets in seven matches and was an assuring presence at the back as Jose Peseiro’s side reached the final of the tournament, where they were eventually beaten by hosts Ivory Coast.

Having returned to Chippa United after his AFCON heroics, Nwabali suffered an injury during last week’s PSL big game against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Nigeria international could not complete the game and had to be substituted as his side went on to suffer a 2-0 defeat against the South African champions.

Initial reports had suggested the goalkeeper was at risk of missing the Super Eagles' upcoming international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

However, those fears have now been allayed, with several news outlets reporting that Nwabali has been cleared to feature in the friendly matches.

The Super Eagles will face the Black Stars on March 22 in Marrakesh, Morocco, before taking on Mali four days later at the same venue.

The update on Nwabali’s injury comes as a huge boost to the West African nation, who have long yearned for a safe pair of hands between the sticks.

‘We don’t give up’

Meanwhile, Nwabali also took to social media to hint at his readiness to partake in the upcoming international friendlies.

Although the former Enyimba shot-stopper did not give any concrete update on his situation, he stated that he was hopeful and confident and would never give up.

“Hope and confidence. It takes just one star to pierce a universe of darkness. We don’t give up here,” Nwabali wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Nigerian goalkeeper has kept eight clean sheets in 18 matches for Chippa United this season.
