Super Eagles transfer: 4 reasons Paul Onuachu should reject Bremen, Fenerbahce, Al-Hilal

Published on by

Trabzonspor’s fans wake up each day expecting news confirming that Paul Onuachu has left the club and moved to one of the tons of wealthy clubs looking to sign the Super Eagles striker, Afrik-Foot reports.

It is not hard to understand the reason why such a move will dishearten many in Trabzon, especially after Onuachu’s outstanding campaign in Turkey. The Nigerian forward scored 26 goals in all competitions, including the strike that was voted as the best of the division. The former Southampton striker finished as the joint-top scorer in the Turkish Süper Lig with 22 league goals, and helped Trabzonspor lift the Turkish Cup.

His brilliant season has attracted interest from several clubs across Europe and the Middle East. However, Trabzonspor are determined not to lose their star striker cheaply. The Turkish club have placed a €30 million asking price on the 32-year-old, making it clear that only a serious offer will be considered.

The race for Onuachu’s signature is currently led by Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Besiktas, while Saudi Pro League clubs Al-Ahli and Al Hilal are also pushing hard to convince Trabzonspor to sell. German clubs Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen have made enquiries, but none has progressed beyond initial interest.

Turkish rivals and Saudi giants step up pursuit

Fenerbahce have shown the strongest interest among the Turkish clubs. İsmail Kartal’s men, who finished second in the Super Lig last term, have already submitted two official bids for the Super Eagles striker. But both were rejected because they fell below Trabzonspor’s €30 million valuation.

Besiktas are also monitoring the situation closely. The Istanbul club reportedly view Onuachu as a key attacking target for the new season, although they have yet to submit a formal offer.

Saudi Arabia remains another possible destination. Al-Ahli have admired Onuachu for months after first trying to sign him during the winter transfer window. They reportedly returned this summer with offers between €20 million and €25 million, but Trabzonspor rejected every proposal.

The Saudi club are also believed to have offered the Nigerian striker a salary worth four times his current wages. Their pursuit even created tension between both clubs, with Trabzonspor reportedly filing a complaint to FIFA over what they described as an illegal approach to the player.

Al Hilal have now joined the race as well. The Saudi champions are prepared to offer a stronger financial package than the Turkish clubs in an attempt to persuade Trabzonspor to negotiate.

Onuachu: Why staying at Trabzonspor still makes the most sense

Despite the growing interest, staying at Trabzonspor could be the smartest decision for Onuachu.

A system built around his strengths

The Nigerian striker is unlike most modern forwards. Standing at 6-foot-7, he is at his best when his teammates supply crosses into the penalty area and use his aerial ability.

Trabzonspor have built their attack around those qualities. Their wide players regularly deliver crosses, while the midfield provides direct passes that allow Onuachu to hold up play and finish chances inside the box.

His difficult spell at Southampton showed what can happen when that system is missing. After joining the Premier League club in an €18 million move, he struggled because the team rarely played to his strengths, leaving him isolated in attack.

Moving to clubs such as Fenerbahce or Al Hilal could once again require him to adapt to a different style that may not suit his game.

Stability during the final years of his peak

At 32, Onuachu is enjoying the best period of his career since leaving Genk. He has already built strong relationships with his teammates, understands the league and has become a fan favourite in Trabzon. Changing countries, teammates and coaching methods could interrupt that momentum.

Remaining where he is gives him the chance to continue scoring consistently instead of spending valuable months adjusting to a new environment.

Protecting his Trabzonspor legacy

Joining either Fenerbahce or Besiktas would be a controversial move because both clubs are major rivals of Trabzonspor.

The passionate Trabzonspor supporters have embraced Onuachu after his remarkable season. A move to one of their biggest rivals could damage that relationship and increase the pressure on him to perform immediately.

If results do not go his way, criticism would come much faster than it does at his current club, where he already enjoys the trust of supporters and teammates.

Football first despite Saudi riches

There is no doubt that Saudi Arabia offers the biggest financial reward. Reports suggest Al-Ahli are prepared to multiply his current salary several times over. However, Onuachu remains under contract with Trabzonspor until 2028 and already earns a competitive salary.

More importantly, continuing to perform at a high level in one of Europe’s competitive leagues could help him remain an important player for Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles as Nigeria prepares for future international competitions.

At the moment, Trabzonspor have made their position clear. Unless a club meets their €30 million valuation, the Nigerian striker is expected to remain in Trabzon, where everything appears perfectly suited to keeping his remarkable goalscoring form alive.
