Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez may be set for a shock exit from Rangers by the end of the 2026/2027 season, Afrik-Foot reports.
The Nigerian defender was Rangers’ standout player during his first season at the club, winning the supporters’ Men’s Player of the Year award after establishing himself as a key figure at the back.
Fernandez’s performances also earned recognition from his fellow professionals, with the centre-back voted into the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year.
His rapid rise attracted transfer interest, with Premier League clubs linked with a move for the former Peterborough United defender.
Now in his second season at Ibrox, Rangers are in a dilemma, particularly after the centre-back’s topsy-turvy start to the season.

Rather than considering whether the Super Eagles defender is good enough to stay, the main issue is whether the club can afford to pass up the financial gain a sale would bring.
Super Eagles: Emmanuel Fernandez’s age could force Rangers’ hand
One reason Rangers may eventually have to consider selling Fernandez is the timing of his transfer value.
Ibrox News, citing journalist Jonny McFarlane, argued that Rangers should accelerate any potential exit because the defender is approaching the age where his resale value could dip.
That argument is relevant because Fernandez is no longer an unproven defender, having had a stellar debut season.
The Gers paid Peterborough United €2.9m for Fernandez in 2025, meaning any substantial future sale would be a significant return on their investment, without a doubt, considering his current market value now stands at €16m.

The longer Rangers wait, the more they must consider whether his market value can continue rising at the same rate.
That does not mean Fernandez is now less valuable after turning 25. Instead, it highlights the reality of the transfer market, as clubs prefer buying players who generally have more resale potential.
Rangers may struggle to reject a huge offer
The second reason is that Fernandez could become too expensive for Rangers to keep if a Premier League club arrives with the right money.
The defender’s first season was strong enough for Rangers supporters to vote him their Men’s Player of the Year, and he’s also gotten endorsement from Nottingham Forest full-back Ola Aina to make a move to the English Premier League.
Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday went even further when discussing the value of the Nigerian International.
Halliday argued that Fernandez could potentially bring Rangers £15 million plus.
“John Souttar will make Rangers £1m potentially. Fernandez will make Rangers £15m-plus. That’s why he has to play,” the 34-year-old said.
That figure would represent a huge profit on Rangers’ initial investment and provide the club with an opportunity to reinvest heavily in their squad.
However, there is an obvious reason Rangers would resist such a move. Fernandez remains one of their most important defenders, and his partnership with Olwethu Makhanya has recently become one of the positives in Derek McInnes’ team.

That is what makes his situation so interesting. Rangers wanting to sell Fernandez isn’t because they no longer need him.
Other key factors like his age, reputation, and the money the club will rake in from his exit might make turning down an offer very hard.
For the Super Eagles defender, that would be another sign of just how far his career has come since leaving Peterborough less than two years ago.
