Super Eagles: 2 steps Arthur Okonkwo must take before AFCON glory

Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has declared his ambition to win the AFCON and represent Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup, but the 25-year-old still has two significant steps to take before those career-defining trophies can become possibilities, Afrik-Foot reports.

Okonkwo made his Super Eagles debut against Zimbabwe at the Unity Cup semi-final in May 2025 in a fixture staged at The Valley, the same Charlton Athletic ground he now calls home following his season-long loan from Wrexham.

He featured in Eric Chelle’s squad for the international friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June 2026, and now stands on the verge of his first competitive Nigeria appearance against Madagascar in Uyo on Friday.

Speaking to reporters in Uyo on Wednesday, Okonkwo left no doubt about his long-term ambition.

“I want to win the AFCON and compete at the World Cup. That’s one of my biggest ambitions as a footballer,” he said.

“I want to take things in my stride, keep learning, keep improving, and hopefully one day contribute positively to the Super Eagles.”

Turning those ambitions into reality now depends on two specific steps.

1. Nail down the No. 1 shirt

The first step is the simplest to state and the hardest to deliver. Okonkwo must convert his Super Eagles opportunities into the sort of individual performance body of work that makes him Chelle’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The competition is real. Udinese’s Maduka Okoye brings Serie A experience and 21 senior caps.

Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali carries the emotional continuity of the AFCON 2023 penalty shootout heroics that took Nigeria to the final, and won the bronze medal in Morocco earlier this year.

Both goalkeepers offer legitimate cases for the starting shirt, and Okonkwo’s task is to displace them across a limited window of competitive fixtures.

The opportunity begins on Friday against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

A composed 90-minute performance, ideally with a clean sheet, would announce Okonkwo as Chelle’s long-term project between the sticks.

A repeat performance against Guinea-Bissau in Bissau on 29 September would essentially close the debate ahead of the November International break and, by extension, the AFCON 2027 tournament in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania next June. Okonkwo’s self-assessment captures the developmental mindset.

“At the moment, it’s still early. I want to learn from everyone and learn new things. The previous camp was good for me,” he added.

2. Secure his long-term club future beyond the Charlton loan

The second step is arguably the more difficult. Okonkwo must convert his season-long Charlton loan into either a permanent move to The Valley next summer or a fresh, first-choice Championship or Premier League chapter that settles the uncertainty over his club-level future.

The context matters. Wrexham signed Nathan Patterson from Sunderland in the summer of 2026 as their new first-choice goalkeeper, effectively signalling the end of Okonkwo’s Racecourse Ground chapter.

His current Wrexham contract expires in June 2027, and the loan to Charlton was widely reported as the launching point for a permanent exit from North Wales next summer.

Charlton Athletic, currently competing in the same Championship division under head coach Nathan Jones, offer the perfect stage.

Okonkwo needs to establish himself as the Addicks’ undisputed number one across the 2026/27 campaign, something he’s done brilliantly so far.

The path to AFCON glory begins on Friday

For Okonkwo personally, the ambition of winning AFCON and playing at a World Cup is the correct one for a 25-year-old goalkeeper at the start of his senior international career. The two steps outlined above are what turn that ambition into a genuine possibility rather than a dressing-room quote.

Friday against Madagascar is the launching point. Charlton across the 2026/27 Championship season is the reinforcement.

Combine both, and Arthur Okonkwo may indeed be the Nigerian goalkeeper who ends Nigeria’s three-decade AFCON title drought.
