Super Eagles: 2 things new Fulham captain got right despite Guinea-Bissau defeat

The Super Eagles suffered one of their most disappointing results in recent AFCON qualifying history yesterday, but Calvin Bassey still provided two signs of his growing leadership, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigeria were beaten 3-0 by Guinea-Bissau at the Estádio 24 de Setembro, leaving Éric Chelle’s side with three points from their opening two Group L matches.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the first half before Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló added further goals after the break as Nigeria struggled to create a meaningful response.

The result exposed several problems in Chelle’s team, but Bassey was not among Nigeria’s worst performers.

1. Bassey led through his performance

Bassey’s display was far from perfect, but the defender showed the kind of responsibility expected from a player who has recently taken on a leadership role at club level.

The 26-year-old was appointed Fulham captain by new manager Álvaro Arbeloa and wore the armband in each of the club’s first three Premier League matches of the season.

Speaking about his new responsibility earlier this month, Bassey explained why leadership has naturally become part of his game.

“Leading comes naturally because of the position I play, being able to see everything and having to communicate as a centre-half,” he said in an interview posted by Fulham’s official website.

That ability to communicate was evident in Bissau, and the mentality matters for Nigeria.

The Italy-born defender does not need to produce a perfect defensive performance to show leadership.

In a game where the Super Eagles lost control, his willingness to remain involved and demand more from teammates was one of the few positive signs from the defensive unit.

2. The Fulham captain finally showed his vocal side

Perhaps the most interesting part of Bassey’s performance was not a tackle or clearance but his reaction to Onyemaechi’s struggles.

Onyemaechi was directly involved in Guinea-Bissau’s opening goal after allowing Franculino to dribble past him and curl the ball into the bottom corner, and after the Olympiacos defender kept opening gaps at the back, Bassey gave him a proper dressing-down.

That moment is significant because Bassey has previously admitted that screaming at teammates is not naturally part of his personality.

“I’m more chill,” he said when discussing his leadership style at Fulham.

“Of course you can get frustrated; I think everyone understands that. It isn’t my personality to start screaming at people, though.”

Yet, the situation in Bissau brought out a different side of him. Wilfred Ndidi, Nigeria’s captain, was on the pitch when Bassey confronted Onyemaechi.

Ndidi eventually left in the 76th minute, with Raphael Onyedika replacing him, while Moses Simon took over the captain’s armband.

Bassey’s intervention stood out because he was not wearing the armband or acting as the team’s designated captain. He simply saw something that needed addressing and reacted like a leader would.

For a player who has only recently become a captain at club level, that is an encouraging development.

Nigeria’s 3-0 defeat cannot be softened by Bassey’s individual contribution, and the centre-back still has areas to improve after an uncomfortable evening, but his performance offered two things Chelle can build on: a willingness to take responsibility and a growing readiness to use his voice.

Those qualities could become important as Bassey develops from an established Super Eagles defender into one of the team’s leaders.
