Super Eagles at 2026 World Cup: How far could Nigeria have gone?

Published on by

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway, but the Super Eagles of Nigeria are conspicuously missing, Afrik-Foot reports.

This is the largest edition of the tournament yet, with 48 teams vying for football’s holy grail across three host nations: the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

This year, ten African countries are represented at the Mundial — nine qualified through the standard process, while the DR Congo secured their spot via the intercontinental playoffs.

Nigeria, three-time champions of the continent, failed to qualify despite multiple opportunities. However, the impressive performances of other African sides have left fans and pundits wondering how the Super Eagles would have fared in the Americas.

Morocco played out a 1-1 draw against Brazil, Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador, and Egypt held Belgium to a stalemate.

Also, the DR Congo made Portugal look ordinary in their 1-1 draw, while Cape Verde provided the tournament’s most interesting results, forcing Spain to a goalless draw and holding Uruguay to a 2-2 scoreline.

Given that Nigeria possesses quality comparable to these teams, let’s explore how the Super Eagles might have performed in the 2026 competition.

Nigeria boasts some of the finest attacking talent on the continent and, indeed, the world. Two Super Eagles stars, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, have previously been crowned CAF Players of the Year. In the recently concluded campaign, several regulars also enjoyed brilliant seasons at the club level.

Paul Onuachu finished as a joint-top goalscorer in Turkey, Osimhen shone in the Champions League, and Lookman made a stellar start to life with Atlético Madrid, contributing nine goals and four assists in 24 appearances. Additionally, Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze remain players capable of producing magic on any given day.

In the middle of the park, the team features stars like Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, and Frank Onyeka. While they may not be the highest-rated players globally, they have consistently rubbed shoulders with elite competition and would surely flourish under the right system.

Defensive Quality

At the back, the squad includes Calvin Bassey, Benjamin Fredrick, Chibuike Nwaiwu, and Emmanuel Fernandez, the latter of whom is creating a massive buzz in Europe following an impressive debut year with Rangers.

Ola Aina remains one of the most reliable right-backs in the Premier League, and Bruno Onyemaechi has repeatedly proven he can be a rock at the back.

This is not merely a list of names; these players demonstrated genuine quality during the AFCON. Had they been fresher and enjoyed a bit more luck, they might well have won that tournament.

Eric Chelle: The Glue That Holds It Together

The core of this squad was present for the World Cup qualifiers but failed to deliver at the time. However, Franco-Malian tactician Eric Chelle has become the glue that brings it all together.

Since taking charge in January 2025, the team has seen significant improvement. While the Super Eagles dropped points in their initial four World Cup qualifiers, they went on to win four of their next six matches under Chelle.

Even during the AFCON, legendary Ivorian midfielder Yaya Touré labeled the Super Eagles the best team in the competition.

With Chelle at the helm, the team has displayed tactical discipline, zeal, and a cohesive playing style. When the regular starters are on the pitch, they are a formidable force.

Before the 2026 World Cup, the Super Eagles proved their mettle in friendlies against Poland and Portugal—even without their full complement of starters. Had Chelle been able to field his strongest squad, they likely would have secured victories.

Prediction: Where would the Super Eagles have finished?

Seeing how African teams have consistently matched their European counterparts, Nigeria would have been capable of making a significant statement, provided they received a favorable draw. Based on their current trajectory, the Super Eagles would likely have pushed for at least a quarterfinal finish at this year’s Mundial.
