Super Eagles: 3 factors behind Boniface’s difficult situation at Leverkusen

Published on by

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has endured a difficult spell at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen this season, with limited playing time raising questions about his role in the team.

Boniface was once one of Leverkusen’s key players, playing a crucial role in their historic unbeaten Bundesliga title triumph in the 2023-24 season. His impressive performances also earned him a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season and the Rookie of the Season award.

However, his career has taken a downward turn since then. He has endured failed moves to Al-Nassr and AC Milan, followed by a loan spell at Werder Bremen last season, where he hoped to rediscover his best form and get his career back on track.

Unfortunately, injuries disrupted his campaign in Bremen, limiting his appearances and preventing him from making the desired impact.

Since returning to Leverkusen this season, the Super Eagles forward has managed just five minutes of action across all competitions. He has not featured since the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season and was also left out of the club’s Europa League squad.

Boniface had hoped to get an opportunity in Leverkusen’s 3-2 victory over Mainz last weekend, especially with Christian Kofane sidelined by injury. However, he was not introduced during the game.

His frustration appeared to boil over as he left the pitch for the tunnel before the final whistle in response to his lack of playing time and that incident has further drawn attention to his difficult situation at the German club.

3 factors behind Boniface’s current struggles at Leverkusen

1. Recurrent injury problems

Injuries have been a major obstacle in Boniface’s career and has prevented him from becoming bery consistent in his career at the club.

The Super Eagles forward has suffered two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries during his career, and his subsequent fitness problems have continued to affect his progress.

The situation also affected his loan spell at Werder Bremen last season when another injury setback restricted his involvement and prevented him from making the most of the opportunity as he had hoped to revive his career at the club.

His fitness concerns have also complicated his attempts to secure a permanent move away from Leverkusen, including the transfer to AC Milan which failed in 2025.

2. Loss of form and consistency

Boniface’s injury problems have also affected his ability to maintain consistent form. During Leverkusen’s historic 2023-24 campaign, he established himself as an important part of the attack, contributing goals and helping the team compete for major honours.

However, his subsequent struggles have made it difficult for him to reproduce that level of performance. Boniface has not enjoyed that continuity over the past two seasons because of his fitness problems and limited involvement.

His loan spell at Werder Bremen was supposed to help him regain his best form, but the injury setbacks prevented him from building the momentum he needed.

His situation at Leverkusen has become even more complicated this season, as he has barely featured for the club.

3. Increased competition has reduced his role in the squad

Another factor working against Boniface is the increased competition for places in Leverkusen’s attack.

His prolonged absence through injury has also allowed his competitors to strengthen their positions. As a result, Boniface now faces the challenge of working his way back into the coach’s plans.

His exclusion from Leverkusen’s Europa League squad has further reduced his opportunities to prove himself. While domestic matches could still provide a route back into the team, his limited involvement shows that he has considerable work to do to regain the trust of the coach.

Even when injuries create openings in the squad, as they did ahead of the Mainz match, there is no guarantee that he will be given the chance to feature.

What next for the Super Eagles star?

Boniface’s immediate priority will be to regain fitness and maintain consistency to return to being a very important player for the club once again.

His reaction to the lack of playing time could also become a talking point within the club, although it remains unclear whether the incident will lead to any disciplinary action.

Leverkusen’s coach Carles Martinez has also played down the situation after the Mainz game.

“I didn’t notice it during the game. I don’t know anything about it. If that’s what happened, we’ll speak to him”, the coach said, via OneFootball.

“I can understand that every player wants to help the team. At the same time, these decisions are part of football. At that moment, I decided to make those substitutions.”

For now, the Super Eagles forward faces an uphill task as he attempts to revive his career at Leverkusen.

Despite previously playing a key role for the club, he will now be hoping to overcome his recent injury struggles and become a more important player for the club this season.
