Super Eagles: Akor Adams’ strike fuels Sevilla safety belief into ex-Atletico defender

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Akor Adams scored a 91st-minute winner to help Sevilla claim all three points against Espanyol last night, Afrik Foot reports.

The 26-year-old was involved in just three minutes of Sevilla’s previous two games leading up to the clash, with Coach Luis Garcia Plaza preferring Neal Maupay and Gerard Romero in attack.

The Spanish tactician threw Adams on in the 75th minute, and in 16 minutes, Los Rojiblancos came from behind to overturn Espanyol’s lead and move themselves further up the La Liga table, away from the relegation zone.

Sevilla coach pleased with Akor Adams goal

The victory for Luis Garcia’s side moved them into 13th position on the La Liga table, three points above the relegation zone, and for the 53-year-old, it’s no less than his team deserved.

“It would have been very unfair to lose,” the former Atletico Madrid B right-back said in quotes revealed by Sevilla’s official website.

“Winning was epic, but we didn’t deserve to lose. We were not at our best, but they [Espanyol] did nothing to win the game.

“The shape of the first goal lifted us. That way to go up. We believed that the changes worked well. Juanlu has been huge, Alexis, Bear, and Akor with the goal.

“In Pamplona the changes did not go well and in the last two games they have given us life. Nema has been able to hold on to get Akor out and hold him up.”

Despite the coach’s decision to play the Nigerian from the bench, he was happy the striker kept his cool and made a huge impact in the game.

“I have celebrated the goal of Akor a lot. The bench came out to celebrate and it is very important.

“You can’t stop believing. You have to go on. We will think about Villarreal to continue in this dynamic, try to add to our points tally, and if we win, much better,” Luis Garcia concluded.
