Super Eagles: 3 strengths that make Bassey vital to Fulham

Published on by

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has established himself as a key player for Fulham and is emerging as one of the club’s most important performers in the Premier League this season.

Bassey joined the Cottagers from Ajax Amsterdam in 2023 and has steadily developed into one of the team’s most reliable defenders, with his consistent performances in the heart of the defence.

The 26-year-old has made 109 appearances across all competitions for Fulham, including playing every minute in all seven of their Premier League matches this season.

Bassey has also taken on a more influential role under head coach Alvaro Arbeloa this season, serving as the club’s captain, which has further strengthened his importance to the team.

The Super Eagles defender was instrumental in Fulham’s 1-0 win over Hull City last weekend, helping his side secure their first Premier League victory of the season and his performance once again highlighted the qualities that have made him such an important figure in the team.

Bassey: What qualities makes the Super Eagles star important to Fulham?

1. His ball-playing ability suits Arbeloa’s system

One of Bassey’s biggest strengths is his ability to play the ball confidently from the back, which has become very important to the style of football Fulham are looking to implement under Arbeloa.

The former Real Madrid head coach favours a possession-based approach, encouraging his players to build attacks from the back. Bassey’s composure on the ball and ability to distribute passes accurately make him a valuable asset in this system.

The Super Eagles defender is comfortable playing short passes to maintain possession and can also deliver longer balls to help his team progress up the pitch and create attacking opportunities.

Fulham recorded 77% possession in their 1-0 victory over Hull City on Saturday, and Bassey played an important role in helping the team control the game.

According to Sofascore, he completed 78 of his 81 passes, registering an impressive passing accuracy of 96%. He also completed six of his seven attempted long balls, demonstrating his ability to contribute to Fulham’s build-up play.

2. His physicality helps him win duels

Another major strength Bassey brings to Fulham is his physical presence. His strength and imposing body make him difficult for opposition attackers to handle, especially in one-on-one situations and physical battles.

His ability to compete for the ball allows him to win important duels and draw fouls that can help Fulham relieve pressure and regain control of a game.

Bassey’s physical qualities also make him effective when defending against strong forwards, as he can use his strength to challenge opponents and prevent them from comfortably receiving or controlling the ball.

Against Hull City, he ranked among Fulham’s leading performers in duels won and fouls drawn and these qualities have helped Bassey establish himself as one of Fulham’s most reliable players under Arbeloa.

3. Bassey’s defensive ability provides stability

Bassey’s defensive qualities remain very central to his importance at Fulham. The Super Eagles defender has shown that he can make crucial interventions and his ability to read situations makes him a valuable presence in the heart of the defence.

According to RotoWire, Bassey has recorded 21 clearances and 10 tackles, winning five of those tackles, across his last four league games, highlighting his involvement in Fulham’s defensive work and his willingness to put his body on the line when required.

He has also helped Fulham to two clean sheets during this period, including in the win over Hull City last weekend.

As the season progresses, maintaining this level of performance will be important if Fulham are to improve their results and achieve their objectives.

Bassey will now be looking to maintain his impressive performances as Fulham seek to build momentum following their victory over Hull City. The Cottagers return to action on Saturday when they face newly promoted Coventry City in their eighth league game of the season.
