Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho could be set to remain at Scottish champions Celtic beyond this summer following the latest development, Afrik-Foot reports.
Iheanacho’s future had been uncertain heading into the summer transfer window, with his one-year contract at Celtic expiring on June 30.
Despite enjoying a resurgence in form towards the end of last season, there had been concerns over his fitness, leaving doubts about whether the Scottish champions would offer him a contract extension.
The Nigerian international had also attracted interest from Turkish side Bursaspor, Brazilian club Vasco da Gama and several clubs in Saudi Arabia.
However, according to Tribal Football, Celtic are now prepared to offer Iheanacho a new contract after his previous deal expired last month.

The Hoops are keen to extend the Super Eagles forward’s stay, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding his long-term future. The club are hoping to complete negotiations before pre-season so that Iheanacho can join the squad from the start and quickly adapt to preparations for the new campaign.
“There’s an offer there to him (Iheanacho) at this minute. So we’ll see how that develops,” Martin O’Neill said during an interview.
Iheanacho: Why Celtic want to hand Super Eagles forward new contract
Although there were initially concerns about offering Iheanacho a contract extension, Celtic now appear to have decided that keeping him at the club is the right move.
One of the biggest reasons behind Celtic’s decision is their need for greater attacking depth.
The Scottish champions will compete on multiple fronts next season and need enough quality in their squad to challenge for every trophy. Although they have already strengthened in some areas, they have also missed out on several transfer targets.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding the future of Daizen Maeda has increased the need for attacking reinforcements. The Japanese forward has previously expressed a desire to play in the Premier League, and his possible departure would leave a huge gap in Celtic’s attack.
Iheanacho’s experience at the club and his familiarity with Scottish football make him a reliable option, while his versatility across the frontline is another quality the coaching staff value.
Another major reason is Iheanacho’s goalscoring record towards the end of last season.
The Super Eagles striker rediscovered his scoring touch and produced several important goals that helped Celtic secure both the Scottish Premiership title and the domestic cup, completing another league and cup double.
His performances reminded the club of the quality he can offer when fully fit, giving Celtic confidence that he can make an even bigger impact next season.
That is also why the Hoops are eager to have him involved from the beginning of pre-season, allowing him to build his fitness, integrate fully with the squad and prepare for what they hope will be a productive and injury-free campaign.

The final decision now rests with Iheanacho. The Super Eagles forward has previously indicated that he is happy at Celtic and is open to continuing his stay.
Should he accept the club’s offer, he would be set to extend his successful spell with the Scottish champions into next season.
