Super Eagles: 2 decisions that backfired on Chelle in Guinea-Bissau defeat

The Super Eagles suffered a heavy defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash on Tuesday, dealing a major blow to their hopes of qualifying for the tournament, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigeria suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Djurtus, failing to build on their 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in their opening qualifying game.

Unlike that match, the Super Eagles were unable to recover after falling behind early, with Franculino Dju putting Guinea-Bissau ahead in the first half.

Second-half goals from Mama Balde and Alvaro Djalo completed the scoring and sent Guinea-Bissau to the top of the qualifying group with six points from their opening two matches.

The defeat was also Eric Chelle’s first competitive loss in regulation time as Nigeria head coach. It was also the Super Eagles’ heaviest defeat in AFCON qualifying history and their biggest margin of defeat in a qualifying match since their 5-1 loss to Algeria in 1990.

Chelle made three changes to the team that started against Madagascar, but two of those decisions appeared to work against Nigeria in Bissau.

1. Starting with just one natural winger

One decision that affected Nigeria was Chelle’s choice to start the game with only one natural wide forward in Ademola Lookman. George Ilenikhena was left out because of fitness concerns, while Taiwo Awoniyi came into the team to replace him.

Meanwhile, Samuel Chukwueze, who started against Madagascar, and Moses Usor, who scored the winning goal in that game, were both left on the bench.

That left Lookman as the only real outlet on the flanks, and Nigeria struggled to create enough width in the first half. The Super Eagles often looked narrow, making it easier for Guinea-Bissau to defend centrally and limit Nigeria’s attacking options.

It was a complete opposite to the Madagascar game, when Nigeria were able to use the flanks more effectively, create openings and deliver dangerous balls into the box.

Chelle recognised the problem and made changes at half-time, but by then Guinea-Bissau had already gained control of the game.

The changes improved Nigeria’s attacking shape, but they were unable to change the outcome as the hosts went on to secure a convincing victory.

2. Replacing Ola Aina with Bright Osayi-Samuel

Another decision that raised questions was Chelle’s decision to bring Bright Osayi-Samuel into the starting XI in place of Ola Aina at right-back.

Osayi-Samuel struggled to make the same impact Aina could have offered on both sides of the game. He provided little going forward and also struggled defensively as Guinea-Bissau found joy down Nigeria’s right side.

The problem became more obvious in the second half, with both of Guinea-Bissau’s goals coming from situations Nigeria failed to deal with on the right side.

While the defeat cannot be blamed on one player alone, Osayi-Samuel’s difficulties contributed to Nigeria’s problems as the hosts continued to exploit the space around the Super Eagles’ right flank.

Chelle will now have to assess his options carefully ahead of Nigeria’s next qualifiers, particularly after the team struggled both to create chances and to deal with Guinea-Bissau’s attacks.

With Guinea-Bissau now three points ahead of Nigeria at the top of the group, the Super Eagles have little room for further mistakes.

Nigeria will be hoping to return to winning ways in the two matches against Tanzania and put themselves back in a strong position to qualify for the 2027 AFCON, with only one qualification spot available from the group.
