Super Eagles goalkeeper battle: How Chelle will choose between Nwabali, Okoye & Okonkwo

Stanley Nwabali is back in football after a difficult spell and his return has reopened a major selection debate in the Super Eagles squad, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Chippa United goalkeeper spent nearly five months away from football after leaving the South African club by mutual consent in February 2026. Many believed he was waiting for a transfer to Europe or the Middle East, but the real reason was far more personal.

Nwabali stepped away from the game after losing his mother, father and grandmother within two months. The emotional pain affected his mental health, and after discussions with his family and medical professionals, he decided to take a break from football to recover.

His return to Chippa United in July 2026 has been impressive. He kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Ravens FC in the Eastern Cape Pre-Season Tournament before saving a penalty in the shootout as Chippa defeated Highbury FC 4-2 after a 1-1 draw to lift the trophy. Coach Brandon Truter praised the Nigerian, calling him one of Africa’s best goalkeepers.

Now, with the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season about to begin and the 2027 AFCON qualifiers approaching in September, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has a difficult decision to make. Nwabali wants to reclaim the number-one shirt, but Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo have both strengthened their cases during his absence.

Nwabali faces fierce competition from Okoye and Okonkwo

While Nwabali was away from football, the Super Eagles goalkeeper position changed completely.

Maduka Okoye took his opportunity with both hands. The Udinese goalkeeper produced outstanding performances in friendly matches against Poland and Portugal. Against Poland, he made several brilliant late saves to secure a 2-2 draw, while he impressed again despite Nigeria’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal. Those displays showed the confidence and consistency that had sometimes been questioned earlier in his international career.

Arthur Okonkwo also entered the picture after completing his switch from England to Nigeria. The Wrexham goalkeeper made his debut during the 2026 Unity Cup in London and helped Nigeria win the tournament. His calm performances, strong command of his penalty area and ability to play with the ball at his feet immediately caught the attention of the coaching staff.

As things stand, Okoye is regarded by many as the current first-choice goalkeeper because of his recent international form. Nwabali is now trying to win back the position he held during Nigeria’s memorable run to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semifinal, while Okonkwo has added fresh competition to the department.

Eric Chelle has repeatedly stressed that places in the Super Eagles squad must be earned through performances at club level, and the coming weeks could decide who starts Nigeria’s next competitive matches.

The first factor is tactical ability. Chelle prefers his teams to build attacks from the back, meaning his goalkeeper must be comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and making accurate passes. Okoye’s experience in Serie A gives him an advantage in this area, while Okonkwo’s education at Arsenal’s academy has made him another strong option. Nwabali is an excellent shot-stopper and commands his box well, but he will need to show that he can consistently fit into Chelle’s possession-based style.

The second factor is club form and match fitness. Nwabali has made a dream return by helping Chippa United win a pre-season trophy, but he now needs regular Betway Premiership matches to prove his long break has not affected his sharpness. Okoye is expected to continue playing at a high level in Serie A, while Okonkwo should also enjoy regular minutes with Wrexham. Strong performances during August will carry significant weight before Nigeria’s September fixtures.

The final factor is big-match mentality. Nwabali has already shown he can perform under intense pressure, especially during the 2023 and 2025 AFCONs, where his penalty saves and calm displays helped Nigeria reach the latter stages. Okoye, meanwhile, has rebuilt his confidence with excellent performances against strong European opposition.
