Samuel Chukwueze’s injury has opened the door for another winger to stake a claim in Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad ahead of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania.
The AC Milan forward is expected to miss several weeks after suffering a left hip injury in his club’s 3-2 victory over Atalanta. He has started treatment and is due to undergo another medical assessment in 10 to 15 days.
Chukwueze’s absence is a setback for coach Eric Chelle, who needs his team to collect maximum points against Tanzania to strengthen their position in Group L.
Nigeria will host Tanzania in Uyo on November 13 before travelling for the return fixture on November 17. With Chukwueze likely to miss both games, Chelle has several options to consider.
Super Eagles stars Eric Chelle could turn to
Moses Usor (LASK)

Moses Usor has already given Chelle a reason to trust him. The LASK forward made his senior Super Eagles debut against Madagascar in September, coming off the bench for Chukwueze and scoring the winning goal.
The 24-year-old is quick, comfortable on the ball and likes to cut inside from the right to shoot or create chances for his teammates.
He has also made a strong start to the season, recording two goals and three assists in eight league appearances for LASK. The exciting winger has returned from a shoulder problem and could be the Superr Eagles’ secret weapon against Tanzania.
Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen)

Tella is another option for the right wing. The Bayer Leverkusen forward can play in several attacking positions and is effective at making runs behind defenders.
Unlike Chukwueze, who often looks to beat his marker with the ball at his feet, Tella uses his movement to find space. He also works hard without possession, which could help Nigeria against a Tanzanian side likely to defend in numbers.
His versatility would give Chelle room to change his attacking approach during either match.
3. Femi Azeez (Brighton)

Azeez could offer Nigeria more power and directness on the right. The Brighton forward recorded 11 goals and eight assists last season in the Championship to secure a Premier League move in the summer.
At the Unity Cup, he already showed Chelle his ability to contribute both as a scorer and creator.
He likes to drive towards goal, attack spaces behind defenders and put opponents under pressure. Those qualities could give Nigeria another way to trouble Tanzania if their defence proves difficult to break down.
Injury has slowed down Azeez this season as he is yet to make his Brighton debut. However, he is back to fitness and has joined team training at the English club.
4. Zadok Yohanna (Brighton)

At 19, Yohanna would be a more adventurous choice. The Brighton youngster has pace and the ability to take on defenders, qualities that could make him useful against opponents who sit deep.
He got a senior Super Eagles call-up from Chelle earlier in the year but a freak training ground injury stopped him from honouring the invitation.
Unlike Azeez, Yohanna has already made his Brighton debut but he has also been limited by injuries so far.
The youngster has made his way back to full fitness and should earn some competitive minutes before Chelle announces his squad for Tanzania.
