Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has a rare opportunity to use Tuesday’s friendly against Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium to test an alternative centre-back partnership, Afrik-Foot reports.
The Super Eagles arrive in Russia on the back of a chastening 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau last Tuesday, a result that exposed problems across Nigeria’s defensive structure, leaving Chelle with pressing questions about which centre-back pairing he can trust when his established options are not available.
Brentford’s Benjamin Fredrick and Rangers’ Emmanuel Fernandez were both named in the squad to face Russia, and both took part in Nigeria’s first training session in Nizhny Novgorod.
Afrik-Foot highlights two reasons Chelle should start Fredrick and Fernandez together against Russia.

2 reasons Chelle must pair Fredrick and Fernandez against Russia
1. Both players need the chance to establish themselves as a partnership
Fredrick and Fernandez arrive in Russia from different club environments, but both have something to prove at Super Eagles level.
The Brentford defender is still carving out his place in Premier League football, while Fernandez has become an important part of the Rangers back line at Ibrox.
The Russia friendly represents the perfect window to see whether the individual development both players have shown at club level can translate into a complementary Nigeria partnership.

Chelle’s established centre-back options — Calvin Bassey at Fulham and Semi Ajayi at Hull City already have considerably more Super Eagles experience, and the head coach does not need another friendly to learn what Bassey and Ajayi can offer.
What Chelle genuinely needs to know is which alternatives can step in when Bassey, Ajayi or Chibuike Nwaiwu are not available, and whether the Fredrick-Fernandez pairing can form the long-term backbone of the Super Eagles’ project.
2. Russia is the perfect Super Eagles test after the Guinea-Bissau defensive failure
Nigeria conceded three goals in Bissau last Tuesday, with Franculino Djú opening the scoring in the 15th minute, Mama Baldé doubling the lead in the 66th and Álvaro Djaló completing the rout in stoppage time.
The defeat exposed problems across the Nigerian defensive structure, from first-ball defending to transition management and set-piece organisation.
The Russia friendly is not another AFCON qualifier, so Chelle can afford to experiment without risking competitive points.

That makes it the ideal occasion to put Fredrick and Fernandez together for 90 minutes and allow the duo some questions:
- Can the pair communicate effectively in the heat of a competitive-tier friendly?
- Who takes responsibility when Nigeria’s defensive line is stretched?
- Can Fernandez’s growing Rangers experience complement Fredrick’s Premier League-level athleticism?
- Can the pairing defend Russia’s transitions and aerial threat under pressure?
- Most importantly, does the Fredrick-Fernandez combination look like a partnership Chelle could trust in a competitive AFCON qualifier against Tanzania or in the March 2027 return fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau?
Russia at home will cause problems, as Abdullahi Bewene acknowledged, but that is exactly the kind of competitive opposition against which Fredrick and Fernandez need to be tested.
The idea Eric Chelle should commit to
The Fredrick-Fernandez pairing may not yet be Nigeria’s first-choice centre-back pairing, and the Russia friendly is not the fixture to declare it one.
However, Chelle should not use the Nizhny Novgorod trip simply to hand fringe players minutes. He should use it to solve problems.

Tuesday is when the Super Eagles head coach will find out whether Fredrick and Fernandez can grow into a centre-back partnership worth building future AFCON campaigns around.
