Former Super Eagles star and veteran of two World Cups, Peter Rufai, has died at the age of 61.

Rufai, who represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, and earned over half a century of caps for the national team, passed away in the early hours of Thursday. According to reports, his death was the culmination of a protracted illness.

Over the course of a 20-year career, the Lagos-born icon represented the likes of Farense, Go Ahead Eagles and Deportivo la Coruna. He was a part of the Nigeria team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the country's first without the benefit of playing on home soil.
