Super Eagles hopeful George Ilenikhena played a vital role off the bench, providing an assist as Monaco edged Brest 3-2 in an exciting Ligue 1 clash on Friday night.
The 18-year-old started on the bench for Monaco’s first match after the international break but made a significant impact in the latter stages of the game.
Monaco began the match brightly, taking the lead in the fifth minute through Maghnes Akliouche, who converted an assist from Ben Seghir.
Aleksandr Golovin doubled their advantage in the 24th minute, and the first half ended 2-0 in Monaco’s favour.
Brest started the second half strongly, with Abdallah Sima pulling one back in the 50th minute, offering the visitors a glimmer of hope.
However, Monaco stayed relentless in attack.
Deep into added time, Akliouche sealed his brace, finishing from Ilenikhena's assist to restore their two-goal cushion.
The drama continued as Ludovic Ajorque netted for Brest in the dying moments, reducing the deficit to 3-2, but Monaco held on for the win.
Ilenikhena in numbers vs Brest
Ilenikhena, eligible to represent both Nigeria and France, came on as a substitute for Swiss striker Breel Embolo, playing 22 minutes.
The teenager registered one assist, one shot on target, and missed a big chance.
Despite limited time on the pitch, Ilenikhena made five touches, delivered one key pass, and completed two of his three attempted passes with 67% accuracy.
He won his only ground duel and succeeded in one of four aerial battles.
The assist was Ilenikhena’s second of the season, complementing the one goal he has scored so far.
His contributions continue to underline his potential as a rising star for Monaco.
