Super Eagles: Kelechi Nwakali joins Omonia 29is Maiou – 2 reasons the move makes sense

Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has completed a move to Cypriot side Omonia 29is Maiou ahead of the 2026/27 season, Afrik-Foot reports.

The former Golden Eaglets star finalized his departure from English club Barnsley last weekend, bringing an end to his two-year stay at the club after joining in 2024.

Nwakali initially moved to Barnsley hoping to revive both his club career and his chances of returning to the Super Eagles after a number of disappointing spells and failed moves elsewhere.

However, after an encouraging first season, his situation changed during his second campaign. He was left out of the squad for much of the season before eventually returning towards the end of the campaign, when he made only a handful of substitute appearances.

With Barnsley no longer considering him part of their plans, Nwakali has now moved on in search of regular football.

According to Footy-Africa, the 28-year-old has joined Omonia 29is Maiou on a one-year deal for the 2026/27 season and will be hoping to make an immediate impact.

There are several reasons why the move could prove to be the right step for the midfielder at this stage of his career.

A chance to rediscover his career and form

One of the biggest reasons the move makes sense is Nwakali’s need to revive his career.

The midfielder burst onto the international scene at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup, where he captained Nigeria to the title and won the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.

However, things have not gone as expected at club level since then. Nwakali joined Arsenal after his impressive performances at the U17 World Cup but never made a senior appearance for the Premier League club before leaving in 2019.

He has since endured a number of disappointing spells at different clubs, with inconsistency and disciplinary concerns also affecting his progress. His move to Barnsley initially appeared to be the beginning of another revival.

Nwakali enjoyed an impressive first season at the club and looked capable of rebuilding his career in England. However, his situation deteriorated during the following campaign as he lost his place in the team and was eventually frozen out for a large part of the season.

A move to Cyprus now gives him the opportunity to start again away from the pressure and media attention surrounding his previous struggles.

A chance to return to the Super Eagles

Another major reason the move makes sense is the possibility of a return to the Super Eagles.

Nwakali made his senior Nigeria debut in 2018 but has not played for the national team since 2022, leaving him a long way from the setup in recent years. However, that door is not closed for now.

If he can establish himself at Omonia 29is Maiou, play regularly and rediscover the form that made him one of Nigeria’s brightest young talents, he could once again attract the attention of the national team.

The Super Eagles are also going through a period of rebuilding under head coach Eric Chelle, which could give players who are performing consistently at club level an opportunity to force their way into the squad.

Nwakali will know that a strong season in Cyprus could help him get back on the radar and potentially earn another chance with Nigeria.

For now, his priority will be to establish himself at Omonia 29is Maiou and help the club put together a strong campaign.

If he manages to do that, the move could give him the chance to secure an extended stay in Cyprus or even earn another opportunity with a club in one of Europe’s top-flight leagues.
