Super Eagles lineup today: Eric Chelle’s pivotal midfield decision ahead of Nigeria vs Mozambique

Published on by

Monday evening’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) action continues with the Super Eagles in a date with destiny when Nigeria vs Mozambique kicks off at the Fez Stadium.

The three-time African champions came through Group C perfect and with the best scoring record of any team in the group stage. However, knockout football presents a whole different dynamic, one that must be negotiated with care as the stakes skyrocket.

Eric Chelle will be able to call on talisman Victor Osimhen for this daunting task, and is also grateful for the form os the likes of Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Wilfred Ndidi, who have all been excellent so far.

Super Eagles to opt for solidity or penetration for Nigeria vs Mozambique?

After an unconvincing opening against Tanzania, the Super Eagles were rampant against Tunisia, prompting many to install them as tournament favourites.

Key to this was Chelle’s decision to introduce Frank Onyeka in place of Samuel Chukwueze. On paper it was a defensive change; however, while it did provide solidity, it also seemed to facilitate better dynamics going forward.

This leaves the Malian with an interesting decision to make for the tie against Mozambique. Chukwueze has been one of the team’s creative leaders when he has played, but often plays too far forward and wide to help in protecting the defence. However, if Onyeka is favoured, especially against a Mozambique side that is likely to sit back, it could prompt a lack of incision.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who played amid heavy rotation against Uganda, is a third alternative that further complicates things.
