Super Eagles stars Moffi, Sanusi crowned champions as Porto win 31st Primeira Liga title

Nigerian stars Terem Moffi and Zaidu Sanusi were crowned champions of Portugal on May 2, 2026, after FC Porto secured a narrow 1-0 win over Alverca at the Estádio do Dragão, Afrik-Foot reports.

The result confirmed Porto as winners of the Primeira Liga, sealing their 31st league title with two matches still left to play in the 2025-26 season. It also ended a four-year wait for the trophy, with Porto taking it back from rivals Sporting CP.

Sanusi, playing at left-back, completed the full 90 minutes in the decisive match and delivered a calm, disciplined performance as Porto protected their lead. Sanusi’s efforts complemented a Porto defence that has been one of the strongest in the league this season.

With this title, Sanusi now has two league crowns with Porto (2021-22 and 2025-26), becoming the first Nigerian to achieve that feat at the club.

Moffi, meanwhile, celebrated the first major trophy of his club career. The striker joined Porto on loan from OGC Nice in January 2026 and quickly became a useful option in attack. Although not always a starter, he played an important role in the title run-in, contributing energy, pressing, and key moments in tight matches.

The success also marked a brilliant debut season for Porto manager Francesco Farioli, who guided the Dragons to the top of the table with a clear tactical plan and strong squad management.

Porto: Moffi and Sanusi’s title-winning journey

Moffi’s path to this title has been anything but easy. His final months in France with Nice were deeply troubled.

After a 3-1 defeat to Lorient in November 2025, angry supporters stormed the club’s training ground, confronting players. Reports claimed Moffi and teammate Jérémie Boga were physically attacked and insulted, with Moffi also subjected to racist abuse.

The situation worsened after he was seen laughing with officials from his former club, Lorient. He was later placed on medical and psychological leave and filed a complaint to leave Nice, saying he no longer felt safe.

Before his January exit, he had scored just two goals in 10 league games, struggling for form after recovering from a serious knee injury.

His move to Porto offered a fresh start. Reuniting with Farioli, who had previously coached him, helped him rebuild confidence. He scored in Europe against VfB Stuttgart and added a goal and assist in the league, proving to be a valuable squad player as Porto pushed towards the title.

Reports now suggest Nice are ready to let him leave permanently, with Porto holding an €8 million buy option.

Sanusi can also be proud of his return to prominence at Porto. After suffering an ACL injury in February 2024, he spent nearly a year recovering and lost his place in the team.

By the summer of 2025, Porto were open to selling him, with interest from clubs in England and Spain. He had played only 102 minutes in the previous season, and many doubted his future at the club.

However, the defender chose to stay and fight for his place. Under Farioli, he regained fitness and confidence, making 17 league appearances, scoring once and providing an assist. His form improved further after the Africa Cup of Nations, and he eventually reclaimed his starting role.

His presence in the title-clinching win over Alverca completed a remarkable comeback, from being close to leaving the club to becoming a key figure in a championship-winning side.
