Why these 3 Super Eagles stars are perfect for Newcastle’s new boss Matthias Jaissle

A few Super Eagles stars have made transfers this summer, and there might be a few more who might make moves this summer. This comes as English Premier League club Newcastle United have appointed Matthias Jaissle as their next head coach following Eddie Howe’s departure.

Although the club is yet to confirm this news, several top transfer sources have confirmed that the an announcement is imminent as all the necessary documents will be signed in the next few days.

The German’s arrival would mark a clear shift for the Magpies, as he has a clearly different football philosophy from former coach Howe. Jaissle’s style is built on high pressing, rapid transitions and positional aggression.

Of course, this is not a surprise, as his coaching background was shaped by the Red Bull coaching system.

1. Victor Boniface

Victor Boniface’s game is built for exactly the kind of transition football Jaissle favours. At Bayer Leverkusen — a club that shares the same Red Bull football philosophy Jaissle came through at Salzburg — the Nigerian striker has shown he can lead the line in a system built around quick vertical play.

He is great at using his physicality and pace to attack space rather than simply holding the ball up. He is also a good dribble and prolific shooter. That profile lines up closely with what Jaissle wants from his forwards: quick, direct, and dangerous the moment possession is won back. A fully fit Boniface could really wreak havoc playing alongside Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes.

He spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen, but that campaign was blighted by injuries. Even though he would be a great addition to Newcastle’s squad, there will definitely be fear about his injury record.

2. Ademola Lookman

Jaissle’s sides have consistently looked to attack with speed through wide areas, whether through Salzburg’s narrow front two or Al-Ahli’s wingers cutting inside from the flanks.

Lookman’s game — pace in behind, comfort cutting infield to shoot, and the work rate to press from the front — fits that mould closely.

The fact that he can operate off either flank, play behind the striker, or even be a false nine, would definitely give Jaissle tactical flexibility as he looks to adapt his system to the Premier League, much as he did in shifting formations between Salzburg and Al-Ahli.

Lookman is currently at Atletico Madrid, after just joining from Atalanta in January. He will be expected to play a key role for the club next season, so it would take a really hefty offer to land the Nigerian.

3. Frank Onyeka

Jaissle-ball needs high intensity in midfield — players capable of pressing high and winning the ball back quickly to fuel his transition game. He needs physical, strong, tactically gifted, and willing runners in the middle of the park to cut off space and recycle possession quickly.

This is where Frank Onyeka comes in, as he is already familiar with the Premier League through his time at Brentford.

Throughout his career, he has built his reputation on exactly the kind of energy and ground coverage that coach Jaissle woud like. A pressing midfielder who already understands English football’s physical demands would give Jaissle a head start in implementing his system without needing an adaptation period.

Onyeka is with newly-promoted Premier League club Coventry City. He spent the second half of last season there on loan, and helped them gain promotion to the top-flight. At the end of the campaign his deal was made permanent. The 28-year-old should not be difficult to pry from Coventry City if they could present a bid of up to €20 million.
