Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has confirmed that he turned down opportunities to leave Slavia Prague last season, insisting his commitment to the Czech champions remains firm, Afrik Foot reports.
The 26-year-old, who joined Slavia from Norwegian side Lillestrøm, has established himself as one of the club’s most important players, helping them win the Czech league title twice.
His performances throughout the campaign attracted clubs from France, with Lyon and Marseille having both previously made contact. However, the 12-cap Super Eagles defender signed a contract extension that runs until December 2027.

The defender is currently sidelined following surgery, having sustained an Achilles injury while on international duty with Nigeria.
Amidst the rehabilitation process, Ogbu’s focus has remained fixed on Slavia Prague’s ambitions for the season ahead rather than moving on to another club this summer.
What Igoh Ogbu said about staying at Slavia Prague
Speaking recently, Ogbu specified his reasoning for rejecting any prospect of a departure this summer.
“I signed a contract extension with the club, and I intend to honour it because Slavia Prague are a big club in their own right and are always ambitious,” he said, per Footy Africa.

“When I signed the extension despite the interest from other clubs, it showed my intention to stay. For the coming season, the plan is the same as always — to give my best,” he continued.
On the injury that has interrupted his momentum, the defender revealed he’s working hard to get back to optimum fitness.
“Unfortunately, I got injured, but injuries are part and parcel of football. You always hope they do not happen, but when they do, the only thing you can do is work hard to get back on the pitch.
“That is exactly what I am focused on at the moment. I am thinking about the new season, getting fit, and helping my team achieve its goals.”

Despite his injury, the former Lillestrom defender is keen on playing Champions League football in the next campaign.
“I want to play in the Champions League again. It is a beautiful competition, and I also want to win the Czech league title again with this great team.
“Right now, I am not thinking about any transfer. My only focus is getting back on the pitch and showing how good a player I am.”
Ogbu also reflected on Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 World Cup, expressing support for the continent’s remaining representatives.
“It is unfortunate that we [Nigeria] did not qualify because every player dreams of playing at the World Cup, but I am supporting the African teams.
“Cape Verde have done well, and so have Ghana and Morocco, who have qualified for the next round. I wish them all the best, and I will be cheering them on,” the 26-year-old concluded.
Two key reasons Ogbu rejected the Slavia Prague exit
The first reason is rooted in unfinished ambition. Ogbu has tasted Champions League football and two Czech league titles with Slavia, and rather than treating those achievements as a platform to immediately seek a bigger move, he has framed them as a project he wants to see through.
His explicit desire to “play in the Champions League again” and “win the Czech league title again with this great team” shows that the 1.87m tall defender wants continued success with the club rather than use them as a stepping stone.
Additionally, with the Czech club, he is a guaranteed starter, which outweighs the uncertainty of an unproven role at a new club.

The second reason is recovery and timing. Ogbu is currently undergoing rehabilitation following surgery, and a summer transfer in the middle of that recovery process would have introduced unnecessary complexity into his return to full fitness.
Moving clubs requires physical and tactical adaptation, like new training methods, new coaching staff, new system of defensive organisation, all of which would be considerably harder to navigate while simultaneously working back from injury.
Staying at Slavia, where the medical staff, coaching structure and tactical framework are all already familiar to him, gives Ogbu the most stable possible environment in which to complete his rehabilitation and return to peak form ahead of the new season.
