Nigeria’s Super Eagles return to action on Wednesday night when they face Poland in an international friendly at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw, Afrik-Foot reports.
It will be only the second senior meeting between both countries and comes at an important stage of Eric Chelle’s rebuilding project. Neither Nigeria nor Poland qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making this fixture less about immediate results and more about preparing for the future.
The Super Eagles arrive in Poland in high spirits after lifting the Unity Cup. Chelle’s side defeated Zimbabwe and Jamaica, scoring five goals and conceding none on their way to winning the tournament.
However, the squad that conquered the Unity Cup is significantly different from the one assembled for this trip. Several regular faces are absent, while others have been handed opportunities to prove they belong at international level.

With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers gradually moving into focus, the clash in Warsaw could provide vital answers to three important questions that continue to hang over Chelle’s team.
Is Maduka Okoye ready to become Super Eagles’ number one goalkeeper?
Since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Stanley Nwabali has firmly held the Super Eagles’ number one shirt.
His performances in Côte d’Ivoire helped Nigeria reach the final, and he remained the first-choice goalkeeper under different managers. However, circumstances have changed dramatically over the past few months.
Nwabali has been without a club since leaving Chippa United shortly after the 2025 AFCON. That situation has inevitably opened the door for other goalkeepers to challenge for the position.
Arthur Okonkwo took advantage of that opportunity during the Unity Cup. The Wrexham goalkeeper finally made his long-awaited senior debut and responded impressively. He kept clean sheets against both Zimbabwe and Jamaica as Nigeria lifted the trophy.

Yet Wednesday’s game is expected to belong to Maduka Okoye.
The Udinese goalkeeper is coming off another strong campaign in Serie A, where he has continued the impressive development that has transformed his career over the last two seasons. His confidence on the ball, ability to play out from the back and composure under pressure have all improved significantly.
Those qualities fit perfectly with the style Chelle wants his team to play.
The Poland match offers Okoye a major opportunity. If he delivers a commanding performance in Warsaw and follows it up with another strong display against Portugal next week, Chelle may have a difficult decision to make.
For the first time in a long while, Nwabali’s place at the top of the goalkeeping hierarchy may no longer be guaranteed.
Who is Calvin Bassey’s long-term defensive partner?
Not too long ago, the Super Eagles appeared dangerously short of elite centre-backs.
Veterans Kenneth Omeruo and Leon Balogun gradually disappeared from the international scene. William Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football before the 2025 AFCON, while Chidozie Awaziem struggled to convince supporters that he could lead a new generation. Semi Ajayi is also moving into the latter stages of his career. The situation looked worrying.

Today, however, the picture is very different. Chelle deserves significant credit for helping to expand Nigeria’s defensive options. Fulham star Calvin Bassey remains the undisputed leader of the defence, but several emerging centre-backs are now pushing hard for regular places.
Benjamin Fredrick has shown maturity beyond his years whenever called upon. Igoh Ogbu impressed many observers during the Unity Cup with his composure and positioning. Chibuike Nwaiwu also delivered encouraging performances that suggested he belongs at this level. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Fernandez arrives after a breakthrough season with Rangers, adding even more competition for places.
The question now is not whether Nigeria have enough centre-backs. The question is which one Chelle trusts most alongside Bassey.
Poland’s attack should provide a stern examination. Whoever stands out between Ogbu, Fernandez, Nwaiwu and Ajayi could move significantly closer to becoming Bassey’s preferred long-term partner. The battle for that position may ultimately shape the Super Eagles defence for years to come.
How will the Super Eagles cope without Alex Iwobi?
Few players have been as consistently important to the Super Eagles over the past decade as Alex Iwobi. Since making his debut shortly after breaking into Arsenal’s first team, the midfielder has become one of Nigeria’s most trusted and reliable performers.

Every manager from Gernot Rohr to Eric Chelle has found a role for him because of his unique qualities. His ability to link midfield and attack, carry the ball through tight spaces and create chances often makes him the team’s creative heartbeat.
Unlike Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, whose absences can be covered by several attacking alternatives, replacing Iwobi is usually far more difficult.
That challenge now faces Chelle. Iwobi is unavailable for the Poland game, forcing the Super Eagles coach to find a different solution in midfield. The encouraging news for Nigeria supporters is that Chelle has already shown he can adapt. During previous matches, he found ways to keep the team competitive even without Osimhen, something several of his predecessors struggled to achieve.
The big question is what tactical route he chooses this time. Will he switch to a 4-3-3 system with greater emphasis on midfield control? Could he use a 3-5-2 formation to strengthen the centre of the pitch? Or might he stick with his preferred diamond setup and ask players such as Fisayo Dele-Bashiru or Philip Otele to assume greater creative responsibility?
Whatever decision he makes, the Poland match will offer a valuable glimpse into Nigeria’s future whenever Iwobi is unavailable.
Nigeria vs Poland is scheduled to kickoff at 7:45pm Nigerian time.
