Super Eagles ratings: Nigeria’s top 5 performers in Europe last weekend

The international break is now here, and several Nigerian players gave Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle something to consider with their performances for their clubs across Europe, Afrik-Foot reports.

We go from goals in Turkey to influential displays in the English Premier League. The weekend produced a few standout Nigerian performances.

In this article, we write on the five Super Eagles/Nigerian players who impressed the most.

1. Gift Orban — 9/10

Gift Orban was the standout Nigerian performer of the weekend. The Amedspor striker continued his extraordinary start to the Turkish season by scoring and providing an assist in his side’s 3-2 victory over Beşiktaş.

Orban opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a long-range finish before setting up Amedspor’s second goal as they built a 2-0 lead.

The goal extended his league tally to seven in six matches, while his assist took him to two for the campaign.

It was another reminder of why his omission from Chelle’s latest Super Eagles squad has caused debate.

2. Calvin Bassey — 8/10

Calvin Bassey produced one of his more influential performances of the season during Fulham’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

The centre-back played 89 minutes and was involved in the move that produced Fulham’s opening goal.

Bassey won the second ball before driving forward and unleashing a shot that Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens could only parry, allowing Lisandro Martínez to turn the rebound into an own goal.

Fulham eventually conceded a late equaliser, but Bassey’s ability to step out from defence and contribute to the attacking phase was a major feature of his display.

3. Ibrahim Olawoyin — 8/10

Ibrahim Olawoyin finally got his name on the scoresheet again for Çaykur Rizespor.

The midfielder scored in the 70th minute to bring Rizespor level at 1-1 against Göztepe, his first goal of the season.

His goal briefly turned the game around before Rizespor took a 2-1 lead, although Göztepe eventually rescued a point with a late penalty.

Olawoyin’s attacking contribution made him one of Rizespor’s most influential players on the afternoon and provided a timely boost heading into the international break.

4. Emmanuel Fernandez — 7.5/10

Emmanuel Fernandez continues to build a strong case as one of Nigeria’s more dependable defenders in Scotland.

The Rangers centre-back completed another 90 minutes as his side secured a 1-0 victory over Celtic, making it back-to-back wins against their rivals within a week.

Fernandez’s importance to Rangers has grown after his impressive performances last season, and another full match in a high-pressure fixture further underlined his consistency.

He had 12 defensive contributions, one key pass, and 52 touches in his 90 minutes on the pitch.

5. Chibuike Nwaiwu — 7/10

Chibuike Nwaiwu rounds off the list after another solid outing in Europe.

The defender has continued to gain valuable experience at club level, and his latest performance showed the qualities that have made him part of the wider Super Eagles conversation.

Nwaiwu featured for the entire 90 minutes as Trabzonspor claimed a historic 4-0 win over Galatasaray. He registered eight defensive contributions and registered 52 touches on the night. He was solid at the back and looked confident.
