Super Eagles star welcomes baby girl ahead of Nigeria vs Jamaica Unity Cup final

It has turned into an excellent week for Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu as Nigeria prepare to face Carribbean giants Jamaica in the final of the 2026 Unity Cup in London, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 22-year-old Trabzonspor defender has received life-changing personal news after welcoming a baby girl with his wife, Melissa.

The timing could hardly have been more emotional for the young centre-back. While preparing with the Nigeria squad in London ahead of Saturday’s final at The Valley, Nwaiwu learned he had become a father for the first time. It is another major milestone in what has already been a remarkable year for one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising footballers.

In less than four years, Nwaiwu has gone from playing in the Nigeria Premier Football League to lifting domestic trophies in Austria and Turkey, earning a senior Super Eagles call-up and attracting attention from clubs across Europe. Now, amid the pressure and excitement of an international final, he is also celebrating the arrival of his daughter.

Trabzonspor confirmed the birth in an official statement released on the club’s website, congratulating the defender and his family.

“We wholeheartedly congratulate Chibuike Nwaiwu on the joy of becoming a father and wish their little one, whom they named Jacinta, a healthy and happy life,” the club said.

Nwaiwu has looked calm and mature since joining the Super Eagles camp, despite only recently making his senior international debut under head coach Éric Chelle.

He played every minute of Nigeria’s 2-0 Unity Cup semi-final victory over Zimbabwe, producing a composed display in central defence as the Super Eagles secured their place in the final against Jamaica. His positioning, recovery runs and confidence in possession stood out during the match, continuing the form that has defined his rapid rise over the past two seasons.

Super Eagles star Nwaiwu: Trophy winner in Nigeria, Austria and Turkey

Nwaiwu’s professional journey began with Heartland in 2021, where he first gained attention in Nigerian football for his versatility and physical presence. Comfortable as both a defensive midfielder and centre-back, he soon earned a move to Enyimba International in October 2022.

His development accelerated quickly at Enyimba. During the 2022-23 campaign, he became an important part of the squad that won the Nigeria Premier Football League title. His aggressive tackling, ability to break up attacks and composure under pressure also earned him recognition with Nigeria’s Under-23 side.

European clubs soon began monitoring his progress and, in September 2024, he completed a move to Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC. The transition to European football proved smooth. Nwaiwu featured in 25 league matches during his debut season and became a fan favourite after scoring a dramatic late equaliser against LASK in the Austrian Cup semi-finals.

He later started the final on 1 May 2025 as Wolfsberger lifted the Austrian Cup for the first time in the club’s history. That success further increased his reputation across Europe and paved the way for a bigger move.

Turkish giants Trabzonspor eventually signed him on a four-and-a-half-year deal worth around €5.5 million, making him Wolfsberger’s most expensive outgoing transfer. Despite suffering a brief thigh injury setback in March 2026, Nwaiwu quickly adapted to life in the Turkish Süper Lig.

He scored three league goals in 16 appearances, including an impressive display against Galatasaray, while helping Trabzonspor win the Turkish Cup after victory over Konyaspor in the final.

Those performances eventually earned him his long-awaited senior Nigeria debut in a 2-1 victory over Iran. Since then, he has continued to grow in confidence within the national team setup.

Nigeria will now hope the defender can help guide them to another Unity Cup triumph when they face Jamaica in London. The Super Eagles won last year’s edition after defeating the Reggae Boyz 5-4 on penalties following a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time.

For Nwaiwu, however, this week will already remain unforgettable. Between lifting trophies in Europe, breaking into the Super Eagles and now becoming a father to baby Jacinta, the defender’s career and personal life are both entering an exciting new chapter.
