Super Eagles GK leaves Omonia – Why this is a risky gamble

Published on by

Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has left Cypriot giants Omonia Nicosia for another Cypriot side, Omonia 29th May, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper has been on the move for most of his career. He started his European journey in Spain, featuring for sides like Deportivo La Coruña and Elche, before moving to Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus.

He then joined APOEL Nicosia in 2020 before crossing over to Omonia Nicosia a year later. However, in his five-year stay at the club, Uzoho failed to nail down a consistent starting shirt.

He made just 77 appearances for the Cypriot giants, the most memorable of which was a 2022 Europa League clash against Manchester United, where Omonia narrowly lost 1-0.

Uzoho pulled off a remarkable 12 saves to keep his side in that contest. Now, he is on the move again. Here is an analysis of the transfer.

Inside Francis Uzoho’s Transfer

Francis Uzoho has left Omonia Nicosia, one of the premier clubs in Cyprus, for Omonia 29th May, a side that recently earned promotion to the Cypriot top flight.

This marks their second promotion in three years, and their primary objective this time around is survival.

The club currently sits at the top of the table, albeit after just one match. Uzoho joined Omonia 29th May on a free transfer despite holding an estimated market value of €300,000. He has signed a one-year deal with the option for an additional year.

However, triggering that extension will most likely hinge on whether the team beats the drop.

Why This Move Is a Double-Edged Sword For The Super Eagles Star

Throughout his time at Omonia Nicosia, Uzoho was largely utilized as a second-choice goalkeeper. With this switch, he is primed to take over the undisputed starting role.

Yet, this remains a calculated gamble. Consistency has plagued Uzoho throughout his career: he can evoke prime Gianluigi Buffon in one match, only to look vulnerable and error-prone the next.

If he struggles to find stability with a relegation-threatened side like Omonia 29th May, securing a move to a bigger club afterward could prove extremely difficult.

On the other hand, regular minutes will keep him sharp, and a string of commanding displays could easily open the door to a higher-profile switch next summer.

Regular playing time and steady form will also ensure he remains firmly in the Super Eagles fold.

As one of the senior figures in the national team setup, he may find it tough to unseat Stanley Nwabali or Maduka Okoye right away. Even so, staying active guarantees his place in the squad and ensures regular opportunities during international friendlies.

Uzoho will be aiming to make an immediate impression at his new home before re-evaluating his options next summer.
