Super Eagles watch: Why recovering Peter Etebo could be the missing piece in Eric Chelle’s midfield

Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Peter Etebo is working towards a return to full fitness after suffering the most serious injury of his career while playing for Turkish club Gençlerbirliği, Afrik-Foot reports.

The former Super Eagles regular saw his 2025/26 season come to an abrupt end after rupturing his Achilles tendon early in the campaign. The injury happened during a league match after Etebo had managed just 42 minutes of football for the club, ending his season almost as soon as it had begun.

Medical staff acted quickly after confirming the extent of the damage. The former Galatasaray star underwent surgery soon afterwards, with doctors initially concerned that the injury could have long-term effects on his career because Achilles tendon ruptures are among the most difficult injuries for professional footballers to recover from.

Since the operation, however, the 30-year-old has steadily progressed through an intensive rehabilitation programme. He has recently returned to light training on the pitch and recently shared images of himself putting in the work in the gym.

Despite that progress, Gençlerbirliği decided not to rush the midfielder back into competitive action. The Turkish club officially ruled him out for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, choosing to prioritise his long-term health instead of risking another setback.

Etebo is now focusing on regaining full match fitness before joining his teammates for the club’s 2026/27 pre-season preparations.

Super Eagles: Why Etebo could still have an important future under Eric Chelle

Although he has been out of action for an extended period, Etebo could still become an important player for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle once he is fully fit.

Chelle guided Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and has largely favoured a 4-4-2 diamond formation, a system that demands energetic midfielders capable of defending, pressing and supporting attacks.

Those are qualities that have always been among Etebo’s biggest strengths.

Throughout his career, he has built a reputation as a tireless box-to-box midfielder who covers large areas of the pitch, presses opponents aggressively and carries the ball forward to launch attacks. His versatility also allows him to operate as a defensive midfielder, a traditional No. 8 or even in a more advanced midfield role when needed.

Within Chelle’s preferred system, Etebo could slot in as the left-sided shuttling midfielder, providing defensive cover when full-backs move forward while also making late runs into attacking areas.

He also offers another option at the base of midfield alongside Wilfred Ndidi, particularly in physically demanding matches where Nigeria need extra energy and ball-winning ability. His capacity to recover possession quickly would also reduce the defensive workload on attacking stars such as Victor Osimhen and his strike partner, allowing them to remain closer to the opposition goal.

In the meantime, Etebo’s main priority remains completing his recovery without any setbacks. If he returns to full fitness during pre-season, the experienced midfielder could yet revive both his club career in Turkey and his hopes of wearing the Super Eagles shirt once again.
