Super Eagles: How Philip Otele can strengthen Lecce’s attack – 2 qualities to expect

Published on by

Italian club Lecce are closing in on a deal to sign Super Eagles winger Philip Otele from Basel ahead of the new season, Afrik-Foot reports.

Otele’s future has remained uncertain since he returned to the Swiss club following the end of his loan spell at German side Hamburg.

The 27-year-old spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan at the Bundesliga club, where he made history, before returning to Basel at the end of the campaign, where he has been awaiting a decision on his future.

However, fresh reports have now linked the Super Eagles forward with a move to Lecce, with the Serie A club pushing to complete the transfer before the start of the new campaign.

If the deal goes through, Otele is expected to add another dimension to Lecce’s attack and there are two major qualities that could make him an important signing for the Italian side.

Super Eagles star’s pace and dribbling

One of Otele’s biggest strengths is his pace and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. He is much more than a traditional winger, as he combines explosive speed with the strength and confidence to carry the ball over long distances.

That combination could provide Lecce with an attacking weapon they lacked for much of last season. His direct running allows him to stretch opposition defences, create space for teammates and drive the team forward on counter attacks.

Otele’s speed also makes him dangerous in transition, where he can quickly turn defence into attack. His ability to take on defenders and progress the ball could help improve Lecce’s attacking output after they struggled for goals and creativity last season.

With his pace and willingness to attack defenders, he has the qualities to become an important player for the Serie A side.

Otele’s versatility will boost Lecce’s attack

Another reason the Super Eagles winger could strengthen Lecce’s attack is his versatility. Although he is most comfortable playing on the left wing, he is equally capable of operating on the right flank. He can also play as a left midfielder if there is a need for him to occupy the position.

On several occasions, he has even been deployed as a centre forward, offering another attacking option when needed.

His ability to play across several attacking positions makes him a valuable asset, while his intelligent movement allows him to drift into dangerous spaces and get beyond defenders.

This would give Lecce more tactical options throughout the season and make the Super Eagles winger a difficult player for opposing defences to contain.

Lecce are keen to complete the deal before the new season begins so that Otele can settle into the squad as quickly as possible ahead of what they hope will be a much improved campaign.

If the Serie A club succeed in signing him, they will be bringing in a winger with the attacking qualities to strengthen the team and give them a better chance of enjoying a more productive season.
