Super Eagles prospect Chuba Akpom will likely be on the move this summer but only if Ajax can agree a fee for the striker.
Still eligible to play for Nigeria and having declared his readiness to wear Nigeria’s colors, he has been on the radar of a few English and French clubs.
There was a furore surrounding Akpom's transfer fee from Middlesbrough that caused rancour with the Ajax set-up, but he has seemed to put that aside to bang in the goals for the Eredivisie side.
Akpom did not have the best of starts at Ajax but has worked his way, especially to be one of the reliables at the club.
The 28-year-old has scored 9 goals from 21 games and has an assist.
Akpom wants to return to England
Despite his relatively good run in the team, Akpom is keen to head back to England as he believes he can make it in the Premier League.
The former Middlesbrough player has not hidden his love for the Premier League and wants to establish himself there after coming through at Arsenal.
Akpom made his Arsenal debut in 2013, when then-coach Arsene Wenger threw him on against Sunderland to replace French striker Olivier Giroud.
He went on to play three more times for the Gunners before he was loaned out to Brentford. This was followed by loan spells at Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, Brighton.
Next were spells outside England that saw him play in Belgium with Sint Truidense, PAOK in Greece before coming back to England with Middlesbrough.
The former Arsenal player went back on loan to PAOK before Ajax picked him up for about $15 million.
Maybe a return to England might ignite an interest in him by Nigeria’s selectors after former Nigeria Football Federation President made overtures to him five years ago but he never got to wear the Super Eagles jersey.
Nigerian line still open for Akpom
There was talk about Chuba Akpom being named in Nigeria’s provisional list for the Africa Cup of Nations but it didn’t materialize at the end of the day.
Ola Aina, who was one of the players tapped up by Pinnick has gone on to feature for Nigeria and was named in the Team of the Tournament at the last Africa Cup of Nations.
The striker has four years left on his contract but he will be keen to move in summer after bids by French and English clubs in the winter were knocked off.
Fulham, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham have all made inquiries about the striker but it is left to see if any concrete will come out of it.
