Super Eagles: Durosinmi scores again – but why has Chelle not taken notice?

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Rafiu Durosinmi scored his sixth goal of the season for Genk as they defeated Kortrijk 3-0 at the Cegeka Arena on Saturday.

Daan Heymans opened the scoring after three minutes before Kortrijk defender Harrison Murray-Campbell scored an own goal ten minutes later. Then, the 23-year-old struck in the 63rd minute to complete Genk’s scoring, continuing a productive start to life in Belgium after his move from Pisa in July.

Durosinmi has already shown that he can deliver consistently, having also scored regularly during his spell at Viktoria Plzeň.

Yet, despite his impressive start, Durosinmi remains outside Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles plans. With Nigeria still searching for dependable attacking alternatives, his form raises a reasonable question: what more must the striker do to earn a chance?

Durosinmi Has Gotten a Look-In Already

Rafiu Durosinmi has already gotten a look-in from coach Eric Chelle, as he was named in Nigeria’s squad for the Unity Cup and friendly games against Poland and Portugal earlier in the year. He gave a good account of himself in those games, albeit he failed to score in three appearances.

At the time, he was at Pisa and was coming off a disastrous campaign that saw the club get relegated and him, just scoring one goal in 12 Serie A games.

However, now that he is at Genk and scoring goals, Chelle did not even look at him for a place in the squad that played against Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar in the AFCON qualifiers.

Even after Victor Osimhen pulled out, the Franco-Malian tactician preferred to invite Taiwo Awoniyi, who failed to impress in the two games that he featured in.

Durosinmi has shown that he has it all in his locker. He is good in aerial situations, can use his feet really well, and puts in a proper day’s shift when he is not even scoring. He has a good combination of power and pace, and looks like someone who Chelle would really like.

However, there seems to be a plausible reason for why Chelle has not invited the Genk man yet.

Why Form Alone Might Not Get Durosinmi Into The Super Eagles

The major reason why Rafiu Durosinmi has been unable to get into the Super Eagles squad is due to the presence of other top-level strikers in the Super Eagles squad.

Coach Eric Chelle has many strikers to pick from, and unlike club football, managers mostly choose players based on trust. That is why someone like Akor Adams was not dropped for the last international break.

For Durosinmi to break into the current setup, the other strikers who are ahead of him in the pecking order would have to suffer injuries, or they would have to drop form, while he must continue scoring goals consistently.

What makes his case even tighter is the fact that Genk play in Belgium, which is not a top league. If he was in one of the top five leagues, he would likely have gotten a call-up.

For now, the former Pisa man has to keep scoring goals consistently, and perhaps, fortune might smile on him in the coming months.
