Key Super Eagles dilemma Rangers star Emmanuel Fernandez could face as West Ham transfer nears

Published on by

West Ham United are preparing to take a closer look at Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez before deciding whether to launch a move for the Rangers centre-back this summer, Afrik-Foot reports.

According to reports from England, the Hammers have identified Fernandez as one of the defensive options they are considering as they rebuild following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2025/26 season.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable rise in Scotland over the past year. After joining Rangers from Peterborough United, he quickly became one of the most important players in the Scottish club’s defence. His performances helped him establish himself as a regular starter, while his threat from set pieces also made him a valuable attacking weapon.

Fernandez featured 33 times in all competitions during his debut campaign at Ibrox, scoring six goals from defence and earning widespread praise for his aerial strength, physical presence and ability to play out from the back.

West Ham’s recruitment staff are expected to watch him closely when Rangers face the London club in a preseason friendly later this summer. The match comes just days before Rangers begin their Scottish Premiership campaign against Dundee United on July 31 and could serve as an important audition for the Nigerian international.

The Championship club are looking to strengthen several positions as they attempt to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, with Fernandez viewed as a player capable of leading their defensive rebuild.

Fernandez: Why a West Ham move could affect his Super Eagles standing

While a move to a club of West Ham’s size would normally be considered a major step, the circumstances surrounding the transfer raise questions about Fernandez’s position in the Super Eagles setup.

The defender is currently enjoying the strongest period of his career. He recently made his senior Nigeria debut and has attracted interest from clubs competing in Europe’s top leagues. Reports have linked him with teams such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, while Rangers are believed to value him at around €28 million.

If Fernandez chooses Championship football, he could find himself competing for international places against defenders playing at a higher level every week.

Calvin Bassey remains Nigeria’s most trusted defender after another strong Premier League season with Fulham. His ability to play both centrally and at left-back gives him a major advantage whenever Super Eagles coaches select their squads.

Semi Ajayi has also strengthened his position after helping Hull City secure promotion back to the Premier League. The experienced defender now returns to England’s top flight, where his performances will be under constant scrutiny from national team selectors.

Another name increasing the competition is Chibuike Nwaiwu. The 22-year-old has impressed since arriving at Trabzonspor and is attracting serious Premier League interest. Fulham are reportedly pushing hard to sign him, and if that move happens, Nigeria could have yet another centre-back playing regularly in arguably Europe’s biggest leagues.

Fernandez’s West Ham decision may ultimately come down to balancing regular football against visibility at the highest level. Staying at Rangers would keep him in European competition and Scotland’s top division, while a move to West Ham would offer the challenge of helping a fallen giant return to the Premier League.

The risk is that Championship football could leave him further down the Super Eagles pecking order at a time when Nigeria’s central defensive options are becoming stronger and more competitive than ever.
