Super Eagles risk losing Eric Chelle after Angola table improved offer

Published on by

Super Eagles’ hopes of keeping head coach Eric Chelle are now under serious pressure after Angola reportedly returned with a stronger offer to lure him away, Afrik-Foot reports.

Chelle’s reputation has grown quickly since taking charge of the Nigerian national team.

At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles thrilled fans with fast, attacking football. They scored more goals than any other team and created more chances, becoming one of the most exciting sides at the competition.

Although the Super Eagles missed out on the trophy after losing on penalties to hosts Morocco in the semi-finals, Chelle’s work did not go unnoticed. Many football watchers praised the clear style and energy he brought to the team.

Since the tournament ended in January, several countries have been linked with the 48-year-old coach, but Nigeria were confident they could keep him by offering a new contract.

Super Eagles talks stall as Angola move back in

After returning from AFCON, Chelle held meetings with officials from the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission about extending his deal. Chelle, who has engaged new transfer negotiators, only signed a two-year contract in January 2025 and is now into its final year.

However, days passed with no official update. According to reports from Sport TV, the discussions failed to make progress, leaving Chelle’s future unclear.

That uncertainty has encouraged the Angolan Football Federation to act again. They are said to have made a bigger financial offer than before, hoping to convince Chelle to take charge of Angola’s national team, the Palancas Negras.

Angola struggled badly at the last AFCON, crashing out in the group stage after two draws and a defeat. Their officials believe Chelle could bring the same attacking spark he gave Nigeria.

Chelle has also been loosely linked with club football, including a possible vacancy at Olympique Marseille after Roberto De Zerbi was dismissed following a heavy loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Nigeria, though, remain at risk of losing a coach many fans feel has brought new life to the Super Eagles, unless contract talks are revived quickly.
