Super Eagles legend tipped for South African coaching job

Published on by

A well-known African football voice, Mamadou Gaye, believes South African giants Kaizer Chiefs should stop delaying and name a full-time head coach, Afrik-Foot reports.

Gaye has pointed to former Nigeria Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh as a strong option for the PSL giants.

The Soweto club have been without a permanent manager since October 2025, when they agreed to part ways with Nasreddine Nabi. Since then, assistants Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze have been in temporary charge.

Despite the uncertainty, Chiefs have remained competitive. They sit third in the league table and are close to reaching the knockout stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, needing just a draw in their final group match.

But Gaye feels a club of Chiefs’ size should not be operating for so long without a properly appointed coach.

A professional club like Kaizer Chiefs, I expect them to have a permanent coach. How long have they been playing without a permanent coach?” Mamadou Gaye said on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa.

Everybody expects a professional club to have a permanent coach. Stability comes with a professionally appointed coach. Simple as that.

All the top clubs in the world can’t go eight months or one year with a caretaker coach.”

Why Super Eagles icon Oliseh’s name entered the conversation

Gaye did not hesitate when asked who Chiefs could consider for the job, as he pointed at Super Eagles’ AFCON 1994-winning midfielder, Oliseh.

Let them take Sunday Oliseh. I’m just throwing out a name; there are many out there.”

Oliseh is currently without a club, but he brings experience from both European football and the international stage. The former Juventus midfielder has coached teams in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, and remains best remembered for leading Nigeria’s national team, the Nigeria Super Eagles.

Away from the dugout, Oliseh has stayed close to the game. At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, he worked as a CAF-accredited analyst and commentator, including during the final between hosts Morocco and winners Senegal.
