Super Eagles: Why Eric Chelle cannot afford another setback vs Tanzania

Published on by

Super Eagles’ next opponent, Tanzania will arrive in Uyo on Sunday, November 8, to begin preparations for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria on Friday, November 13.

The Taifa Stars will have five days to settle in, train and prepare for the match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle, keen on getting Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign back on track, has a massive task at hand against the Tanzanians. Following the Taifa Stars decision to arrive early in Nigeria, Chelle would be put on immediate alert not to underestimate the AFCON 2027 co-hosts.

Nigeria lost 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau in their last qualifier in September and cannot afford another setback if they hope to get their campaign back on track.

Tanzania have time to prepare

Tanzania coach Miguel Gamondi will have enough time to get his players accustomed to the weather in Akwa Ibom and work on his game plan before facing Nigeria.

His 24-man squad includes 12 home-based players and 12 who play abroad. The early arrival, confirmed by The Citizen, will give him time to bring the group together and prepare them for the challenge ahead.

Gamondi has made it clear that Tanzania will not travel to Nigeria just to defend. He wants his team to press, keep possession and attack when opportunities arise.

That approach could cause problems for Nigeria, whose defensive errors against Guinea-Bissau proved costly.

Tanzania have yet to win a match in their opening two qualifiers, including a 2-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau. However, they have already secured a place at the 2027 AFCON as co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda.

Without the pressure of fighting for qualification, Gamondi’s players can focus on testing themselves against the Super Eagles and building confidence ahead of the tournament.

Chelle’s Super Eagles under pressure to deliver

Nigeria have three points from their opening two matches and trail Group L leaders Guinea-Bissau, who have six. Another poor result would leave the Super Eagles with more work to do in the remaining qualifiers.

Chelle, who is yet to make his Super Eagles squad list public, also has less time to prepare his team. Many of his Europe-based players will arrive after playing for their clubs over the weekend.

He must make the most of the sessions available to address Nigeria’s defensive problems and improve the link between midfield and attack. Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman will also need support if the Super Eagles are to break down Tanzania’s defence.

The Super Eagles need a win in Uyo to restore confidence and ease the pressure ahead of the return fixture in Tanzania on November 17.
