Super Eagles vs Guinea-Bissau: 5 key Djurtus Nigeria must tame on Tuesday

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are in for a difficult challenge when they travel to Bissau for their second game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday,Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigeria opened their Group L campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar, but the Djurtus made an even stronger statement by beating Tanzania 2-0 away from home.

Guinea-Bissau’s victory was built around a disciplined team performance, but there was also plenty of individual quality in Emiliano Té’s side.

Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé scored the goals in Zanzibar, with Beto providing the assist for the opener. Álvaro Djaló also featured from the bench, while the Djurtus have several other players capable of causing problems for Eric Chelle’s team.

With Nigeria needing another positive result to move to the top in Group L, here are five Guinea-Bissau players the Super Eagles must keep under control in their fixture on Tuesday.

1. Mama Baldé

Baldé’s threat goes beyond the goal he scored against Tanzania. The 30-year-old Brest forward operates as a forward who can stretch a defence with his running, while his physicality allows him to compete with centre-backs when the Djurtus go direct.

His goal in Zanzibar showed the problem. Dálcio’s through ball found Baldé running into the right side of the penalty area, where he had enough time and space to pick out the bottom corner.

That is precisely the type of situation Nigeria must prevent. If the Super Eagles push their defensive line forward, Baldé can look to run beyond it. If they drop deeper, he can use his physical presence to receive the ball and bring teammates into play.

There is also an obvious psychological warning for Nigeria, and that is the fact that Baldé scored the winner when Guinea-Bissau beat the Super Eagles 1-0 in Abuja during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

Nigeria’s centre-backs will need to stay connected and avoid giving him the space between the defensive line and goalkeeper that he thrives on.

2. Franculino Djú

Franculino presents a different problem. The 21-year-old is not simply a conventional winger or striker waiting for service. He has the freedom to move into central areas, receive the ball facing goal and attack the space around the penalty area.

His goal against Tanzania showed the kind of danger he poses. Beto laid the ball off to him, and Franculino had enough room outside the box to shift the ball onto his left foot before finding the top corner. That creates a particular problem for Nigeria’s midfield.

If the Super Eagles’ midfielders follow him too aggressively, they risk opening spaces behind them. If they allow him to receive between midfield and defence, he can turn and drive towards goal.

So Nigeria need their midfield and defence to communicate constantly when Franculino moves centrally. This is why there is a good possibility that Frank Onyeka will start the game in Bissau.

Franculino is quick and packs a strong shot which he can unleash without warning. So leaving him untracked around the edge of the box could be costly.

3. Beto

Beto’s influence is less about spectacular individual moments and more about how he changes Guinea-Bissau’s attacking structure.

The former Everton striker gives the Djurtus a physical reference point up front. Against a Nigeria side expected to have more possession, that matters because Beto provides an outlet whenever Guinea-Bissau recover the ball.

His contribution to Franculino’s opener was a perfect example. Beto received the ball and helped create the shooting opportunity rather than simply waiting inside the penalty area.

Nigeria must therefore avoid treating possession as the end of the defensive phase.

When the Super Eagles lose the ball, Beto is the player Guinea-Bissau can immediately target. If he is allowed to hold it up, bring runners into play and draw defenders towards him, the Djurtus can quickly turn a Nigerian attack into a counter.

Super Eagles defensive stalwart Calvin Bassey is known as a bully and knows how to use his body against attackers.

But Beto can match him for strength and can brawl it out. So Bassey has to be smart and tactful with how he goes about his job on Tuesday.

4. Álvaro Djaló

Djaló is particularly relevant because of the way Nigeria could approach the game.

The Athletic Club winger offers Guinea-Bissau a direct option from wide areas and can attack the space behind an advanced full-back.

He came on for Franculino in the 69th minute against Tanzania and still managed to threaten, having a late effort blocked from inside the box. That makes his positioning important.

Nigeria will want their full-backs involved in building attacks, but the higher they go, the more space they leave behind them. Djaló can exploit that space, particularly during quick transitions.

The solution is not necessarily to keep the full-backs deep throughout the game. Instead, Nigeria’s midfielders and wingers will need to provide cover when possession is lost.

If Djaló is repeatedly allowed to receive with space in front of him, Guinea-Bissau will have an obvious route into Nigeria’s defensive third.

5. Alfa Semedo

Semedo’s importance is likely to be felt away from the penalty areas. The midfielder entered Guinea-Bissau’s 2-0 victory in the 79th minute after Ronaldo Vieira went off injured.

His role gives the Djurtus another physically strong presence in midfield and could become particularly important if Nigeria attempt to establish sustained possession.

For Chelle, the concern is the second ball. Nigeria’s attacking players will often try to receive between the lines, while the midfield will look to recycle possession after losing the ball. Semedo’s physical presence can make those moments more difficult and allow Guinea-Bissau to disrupt Nigeria’s rhythm.

If the Djurtus succeed in turning midfield into a series of physical duels rather than a possession battle, they can reduce the amount of time Nigeria’s creative players have to operate. This is not a game for just Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi who is not known for his physicality. That is why adding an Onyeka would be the smart option.

Although Alfa Semedo did not start in Tanzania, Emiliano Té would definitely recognize what harm Nigeria can cause and tweak his midfield by using the Al Fayha this time.
