Super Falcons face South Africa after WAFCON exit: What Nigeria must do to reach 2027 World Cup

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face South Africa in their next match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), despite both teams suffering quarter-final defeats, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigeria’s hopes of defending their African title were ended by Cameroon on Sunday, August 9, as the Indomitable Lionesses secured a 1-0 victory at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen scored the only goal in the 19th minute with a powerful free-kick that beat Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The defeat means Nigeria will not play in the WAFCON semi-finals on August 12. It also means the Super Falcons cannot qualify directly for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the four automatic African places reserved for the semi-finalists.

Yet Nigeria’s World Cup dream is still alive. CAF’s tournament schedule gives the losing quarter-finalists another route, with two classification play-off matches scheduled for Thursday, August 13, in Casablanca.

How Nigeria’s Super Falcons were paired with South Africa

The answer lies in the WAFCON knockout bracket. South Africa entered the quarter-finals as runners-up in Group B, while Morocco qualified as winners of Group A. Their quarter-final was therefore one of the first two last-eight matches played on Saturday, August 8.

Morocco won that meeting, sending the hosts into the semi-finals and leaving South Africa as one of the four teams that had lost in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria’s situation was decided in the other side of the bracket. The Super Falcons finished second in Group C and were drawn against Cameroon, who won Group D. Cameroon’s 1-0 victory sent the Indomitable Lionesses into the semi-finals and left Nigeria among the four quarter-final losers.

CAF’s schedule pairs the loser of QF1 with the loser of QF4 in one of the play-off matches. Since South Africa lost QF1 and Nigeria lost QF4, they are automatically paired together.

The Super Falcons versus South Africa match is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, with the teams meeting at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca at 20:00 local time, according to the published tournament schedule.

Nigeria and the Banyana Banyana have met several times in major WAFCON matches, including the 2024 semi-final, when the Super Falcons won 2-1 and went on to lift their 10th continental title. This time, however, there will be no trophy at stake between them. The prize is a continued route to the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The World Cup route does not end on August 13 if Nigeria defeat South Africa. FIFA’s global play-off tournament will take place in two phases. The first phase is scheduled for November and December 2026 and will feature six teams, including two from Africa. Two teams from that phase will progress to a final six-team phase in February 2027, where three World Cup places will be decided through direct knockout matches.

Nigeria’s road to Brazil has therefore become much longer than expected. The next 90 minutes could decide whether Nigeria get another chance to reach Brazil 2027 or suffer a second major disappointment in the space of four days.
