In a closely contested closed-door friendly, Canada edged out Nigeria's Super Falcons 1-0, thanks to an early goal by Jannie Beckie.

The match, held under tight conditions, showcased the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, with Canada emerging victorious through Beckie's opportunistic strike in the 8th minute following a mistake by Nigeria's Deborah Abiodun.

Canada top Super Falcons in the early exchanges

The early stages saw reigning Olympics champions Canada dominate as the Nigerian midfield struggled to find their rhythm. Beckie had another golden opportunity shortly after her goal, but the Nigerian goalkeeper's timely intervention kept the scoreline from widening.

As the game progressed, the Super Falcons began to find their footing. Rasheedat Ajibade, in particular, made several strong runs, though her finishing touch was lacking.

By the 22nd minute, Nigeria began to assert themselves with a good shot from Toni Payne that forced a save from the Canadian goalkeeper, leading to a corner.

Deborah Abiodun, eager to make amends for her earlier mistake, unleashed a long-range shot that was also saved.

The Super Falcons' increasing pressure was evident as they took control of the game.

In the 31st minute, Deborah narrowly missed a chance off a rebound from a corner kick. This was followed by another close miss, signaling Nigeria's growing threat.

Despite these efforts, the Canadian defense managed to hold firm, although they struggled to contain the persistent Nigerian attacks.

By the 36th minute, Nigeria displayed good ball distribution and dominated possession. However, their efforts were yet to be rewarded with a goal.

A notable attempt came from Echegini, whose shot went just wide. As the first half drew to a close, Canada's Ashley Lawrence almost doubled their lead, but the Chiamaka Nnadozie, in goal for Nigeria was equal to the task, making crucial saves to keep the score at 1-0.

The second half began with Canada maintaining their slim lead. Nigeria made several changes, with Esther Okoronkwo replacing Toni Payne in the 62nd minute and Ajibade caught offside in the 64th. The Canadians also shuffled their lineup, bringing in fresh legs to maintain their defensive structure.

Despite numerous chances, including several missed opportunities by the Super Falcons in the latter stages, the match ended 1-0 in favor of Canada.

Both teams agreed to a penalty shoot-out after the game irrespective of the scoreline, and the Super Falcons triumphed 5-4 after scoring all their spot kicks.

They will now fly out to Bordeaux on 18 June for the final leg of preparation before their first 2024 Olympics group game with Brazil on June 25.
