Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face Portugal in an international friendly on June 23 as part of preparations for the 2025 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The match will take place in Lisbon and is one of two scheduled games against the Portuguese women’s national team, with one officially sanctioned by FIFA.

The friendly comes during a proposed week-long training camp in Portugal, designed to help the team build cohesion and team chemistry ahead of the tournament.

The camp falls within the FIFA international window (June 23 to July 5), just before WAFCON kicks off on July 5 in Morocco.

The last time the two teams met was in June 2021 in a friendly, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

This Portugal tour follows a two-game home series against Cameroon. The Super Falcons are set to face the Indomitable Lionesses on Saturday, May 31 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, and again on Tuesday, June 3 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

Madugu tests Super Falcons with Cameroon before Portugal encounter

Interim coach Justin Madugu has called up 23 players for the double-header, with Rasheedat Ajibade leading the squad.

She is joined by Rinsola Babajide of UD Tenerife and Michelle Alozie of Houston Dash. Francisca Ordega also returns to the team after missing recent fixtures, including the Olympic qualifiers.

Shukurat Oladipo of AS Roma is also included alongside Deborah Abiodun, who also makes a return to the team.

Notably absent is Bay FC striker Asisat Oshoala, who was not included in the latest squad. A few standout performers from the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) like Josephine Mathias of Nasarawa United and Emem Essien of Edo Queens have been called up, suggesting the technical crew is keeping an eye on domestic talent.

With competitive friendlies and a focused camp lined up, the Super Falcons are stepping up their build-up to WAFCON where they’ll aim to reclaim their continental crown.
