Super Falcons: Nigeria’s 3 best performances of 2026 ranked

Published on by

Nigeria’s Super Falcons ended their competitive calendar for 2026 on a high, thrashing Comoros 5-0 on Tuesday to round off a year of contrasting fortunes for the African champions.

The emphatic victory was their final competitive fixture of the year, although the Nigeria Football Federation could still arrange international friendlies during the November break.

Their next competitive assignment is expected to come in February 2027, when Nigeria face Morocco in a double-header as they pursue qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

It has been an eventful year for the Super Falcons, who began 2026 as reigning African champions but suffered disappointment at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The 10-time African queens lost their continental crown and missed out on qualification for next year’s Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria played 11 matches during the year, recording seven victories and four defeats without a draw.

Here are the three best Super Falcons matches of 2026.

Super Falcons’ top 3 matches of 2026

3. Nigeria 6-2 Egypt: WAFCON attacking masterclass

The Super Falcons produced one of their most devastating attacking performances of the year when they defeated Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C match at WAFCON on August 5.

After suffering a shock opening defeat to Malawi and edging Zambia in their second group game, Nigeria needed a victory to secure their place in the quarter-finals. The Super Falcons responded emphatically.

Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, while Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time.

Egypt briefly threatened a comeback through Nadine Ghazi’s penalty, but the Super Falcons took control after the break. Uchenna Kanu made it 3-1 before Christy Ucheibe converted another penalty.

Ghazi scored again for Egypt, but captain Rasheedat Ajibade added Nigeria’s fifth from the spot before Joy Omewa completed the scoring in stoppage time.

That win kept intact the Super Falcons’ record of making it past the group stage of every edition of the WAFCON.

2. Nigeria 1-0 Zambia: Ten-woman Falcons show resilience

The Super Falcons secured a hard-fought win over Zambia on matchday two at the WAFCON, a game the girls showed lots of guts and grit despite a clear lack of tactical depth.

Oshoala scored the decisive goal in the eighth minute, reacting quickly after Zambia goalkeeper Hazel Nali blocked her initial effort.

The contest became more difficult for Nigeria shortly before half-time when defender Oluwatosin Demehin was sent off for denying Zambia captain Barbra Banda a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Reduced to 10 players, the Super Falcons reorganised defensively and endured sustained pressure from the Copper Queens.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and the Nigerian defence stood firm to preserve the lead and secure three crucial points in Group C.

After their opening day loss to Malawi, another defeat or draw against Zambia would have damaged the Super Falcons’ hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

1. Nigeria 5-0 Comoros: Super Falcons finish the year in style

The Super Falcons delivered a five-star performance to close their competitive calendar for 2026, thrashing Comoros 5-0 in the second leg of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying tie at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Tuesday.

Four days after beating the same opponents 2-0 at the same venue, the Falcons ran riot to complete a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory and book their place in the next qualifying round.

Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu scored twice each, while Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty.

It was Nigeria’s biggest win since a similar 5-0 victory over Zambia in the quarter finals of the 2024 WAFCON.

The emphatic win was a fitting end to Nigeria’s competitive year. It also secured progression in the race for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, with Morocco awaiting the Super Falcons in the next round.
