Super Falcons: Why South Africa could expose the biggest lesson from Cameroon defeat

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be hoping to soar when they take on South Africa in the playoffs of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday, Afrik-Foot reports.

Both sides are coming off heartbreaking defeats in the quarter-finals of the 2026 WAFCON. Nigeria was surprisingly defeated by Cameroon, while the Banyana Banyana lost 2-1 to Morocco.

For the Super Falcons, there is no time to cry, or feel sorry for themselves. So, they have to be at their best on Thursday, as this is win or bust. If they lose, Nigeria will miss the World Cup, a terrible record the women will not want to set for themselves.

What Weakness Did Nigeria’s Loss to Cameroon Reveal?

Against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, the Falcons played well. They dominated the midfield and created many opportunities to get shots away. But they failed to take their opportunities when they came.

The Super Falcons took 19 shots in that fixture, nine of which were on target. But while Bihina Michaely was brilliant in that game and kept Nigeria out, the Super Falcons’ attackers were not ruthless enough.

Gift Monday, Rasheedat Ajibade and, of course, Esther Okoronkwo were guilty of this.

Also, it must be noted that the quality of the opportunities was not good enough. Aside from the Okoronkwo opportunity in the closing embers of the game, there was never really any situation where Nigeria played through the Cameroon defence and created a proper gilt-edged opportunity.

A major reason for that was the fact that the Indomitable Lionesses decided to defend really deep and attract pressure, with the hope of catching Nigeria on the counter.

Also, in the first half, there were periods when the Super Falcons were evidently struggling with the Cameroonians’ physicality. But they eventually adjusted in the second half.

Can South Africa Expose Super Falcons’ Weaknesses?

If there is any team that can expose Nigeria’s weaknesses, it is definitely South Africa. They have been one of the biggest threats to the Super Falcons’ dominance on the continent.

Although they are not as physical as Cameroon, they could have picked up a few things from watching Nigeria’s game against Cameroon.

Therefore, it will not be a surprise to see them sit back and hope to catch the Super Falcons on the counter. Besides, they have players like Thembi Kgatlana and Hildah Magaia who can exploit Nigeria and catch them on the break.

They will also be riding on a lot of confidence, having taken two wins and a draw from their last five meetings with the Super Falcons.

Also, having seen what Bihina did last time out against the ten-time African champions, South Africa’s goalkeeper Kaylin Swart will be motivated to produce something similar.

The Super Falcons have shown that they can bleed. So, every opponent will be looking to get something from them now.
