Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi finally got his Hamburger SV career moving on Saturday, as he scored his first goal for the German club in a dramatic 3-2 victory away to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
The Nigerian striker came off the bench in the 76th minute and needed only seven minutes to make an impact, rising to meet Miro Muheim’s cross with an 83rd-minute header that made it 2-2.
Muheim completed Hamburg’s comeback with a stoppage-time winner, but Moffi’s contribution could be important beyond the three points.

After a slow sttart at Hamburger, the goal gives the striker an opportunity to rebuild his momentum, push for more playing time and revive his Super Eagles prospects.

Why Terem Moffi’s Goal Is One Of The Most Important In His Career
1. Moffi can finally build momentum

For a striker, getting the first goal out of the way can be an important psychological breakthrough. Moffi had arrived at Hamburg looking to establish himself, but his early progress has been disruspted by lack of game time.
His return against Hoffenheim offered a chance to restart that process, and he took it. Coming on with Hamburg trailing 2-1, he delivered when his team needed an equaliser, showing the penalty-box instincts expected of a centre-forward.
One goal does not guarantee a scoring run, but it gives Moffi something tangible to build on. If he can stay fit and turn this breakthrough into a consistent run of performances, he can begin to put the difficult opening period behind him.
2. The goal strengthens his case for more minutes

Moffi’s immediate challenge is to turn his impact from the bench into a bigger role under Hamburg coach Merlin Polzin.
The circumstances make his contribution particularly valuable. Hamburg had attacking absences heading into the game, with Patson Daka and Albert Grønbæk sidelined by thigh injuries. Moffi therefore has an opportunity to make himself more than a substitute option.
His equaliser also showed that he can influence a game without needing a long period on the pitch. That will strengthen his argument for more minutes, although he will still need to show fitness, sharpness and consistency in training and subsequent matches.
Hamburg need reliable goalscoring options. If Moffi can follow up his Hoffenheim goal with further contributions, he could make it difficult for Polzin to leave him on the bench.
3. He has a chance to return to Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles plans

Moffi’s club form also matters for his international future. Nigeria have several attacking options, so he will need more than one encouraging appearance to convince Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle that he deserves a place in the squad.
However, scoring in the Bundesliga gives him a useful starting point. Regular minutes and goals for Hamburg would strengthen his case, particularly if he can show that he is back to his best and able of sustaining his form.
The timing of the breakthrough gives him a platform to work from, but the next step is crucial. If Moffi can build a consistent scoring record over the coming weeks, he will have a stronger argument for a recall.
For now, the Hoffenheim match offers Moffi a valuable fresh start. His task now is to make sure this is the beginning of a solid goalscoring run instead of a flash in the pan.
